[Known issue] Preview does not work correct

Post by Vietwoojagig »

Hi,

I try to encode a recording from TV, which is 1280x720. In fact the recording is approx. 4:3, so I have to crop a lot left and right (170 left and 176 right), remaining 934x720 as the output.

The preview does not show all pixels. It seems that the pixels are somehow forced to a 16:9 window, cropping top and bottom pixels. But left and right are also cropped, but only little. Picture is not strechted or shrinked. So no chance to identify exactly if auto crop works correctly.

I'm using the latest build on a MAC 10.7.4.

Well, when I talk about "Preview", I'm not talking about a test-encoding of 15seconds or so.
I'm talking about the window, that is shown, when I press on "Preview Window".
This window has approx. 16:9 even when the 16:9 video setting result in a cropped 4:3 video, making it impossible to see, if top and bottom is cropped correctly, because top and bottom are outside the visible area.
Does this clarify my problem?

OK, additional information;
Preview Window does not work correctly on a display with 1280x800 (Macbook). On a display with 1440x900 (Macbook Pro), it works correct.

What the preview windows probably needs is a complete re-write.

Anyway, your issue is a known issue. I've been complaining to the MacGUI maintainer about it, but I'm too lazy to do said re-write and he's too busy with real life to fix it.

The only thing you can do about it (aside from waiting - very patiently - for a fix) is to use a display that is reasonably larger than the source (for 720p, a MacBook pro will suffice, for 1080p, you may need an even larger display).

There is also some other small bugs for the Mac Preview Window
When you are doing stills, the preview window works mostly good. But when you encode the preview the placing of the video is off and sometimes doesn't work right when you are trying to remove the black bars.

The preview window basically needs a rewrite. It's not insignificant.

I am aware of it as Rodeo said, I have about half of it rewritten. It should work much better when I am done. The existing macgui preview code goes back to hb 0.7.1 and has been added to so many times, in looking to fix it I decided to just start over. Its gonna be a while yet but .... I am aware of it and working on it as time permits. Sorry its in such poor shape.
