NTSC Anamorph setting

Post by Vietwoojagig »

Hi,
having an NTSC source with 4:3 ratio.

Video settings say:
Source: 720x480, Output 720x480, Anamorphic: 640x480

Why am I not able to set Anamorphic to 720x540, even in the custom settings?
PAR would be the same, only display width would be original?

I don't know how, I tried a lot, but finally I was able to set
Source: 720x480, Output 720x540, Anamorphic: 720x540
which is not exactly what I want?

I'm using the latest build on a MAC.

HandBrake won't let you upscale.

Source: 720x480, Output 720x480, Anamorphic: 640x480

That means the output will have an actual resolution of 720x480; the 640x480 "anamorphic" size just means it'll be displayed with the proper 4:3 aspect ratio.

I was assuming, that a player would be forced to show 640 pixel in the horizontal, and therefore would loose quality during the display.
So anamorphic 720x520 would be also correct (as it is also 4:3).

No, that shouldn't happen. For example, on a 1080p display, any non-crappy player will directly upscale to 1440x1080, without first downscaling to 640x480.

The pixel aspect ratio applies to the width, not height. 720x480 storage, 720x540 display is simply not possible under normal circumstances.
