iTunes won't import 1080 HD 'Normal'

Post by Jeggler »

Just encoded my first BD rip, using 'Normal' preset. iTunes will not import the completed output; I cannot even play the resulting m4v file in QuickTime. Any suggestions welcome.

My money is on the absence of large file support on a >4 GB encode, place your bets.

'Activity Log' if it's Handbrake's you mean, I would have to repeat the procedure to do that. TedJ - is this iTunes' large file support you are talking about or Mac OSX (seeing that it is also affecting QuickTime)? Is it a codec issue at all (I have Perian installed and this should surely give all my QT apps the correct codecs). Any suggestions as to how I can get this working - after all, other users seemingly have had success using Handbrake to get BD files onto their AppleTV 3rd gen., so what am I doing wrong?

Just tried again using the High Profile preset and cancelled almost immediately when I saw 'WARNING: results will be invalid' in the activity log:

Ignore that message. It's harmless and completely unrelated to your issue.

So I just tried with two more titles. One produced an mkv file of 17.2 GB, the other one of 33.5 GB. I put them both through Handbrake on Normal setting. The first one produced a m4v file of 2.6 GB, which imported into iTunes with no problems, and the second one a file of 12.7 GB, which is unrecognised as a video file just like the one I originally posted about. Do I understand there is a maximum file size? At what level does the restriction operate (Quicktime, OSX...)? Why does HB produce such widely differing file sizes (with the original files one was roughly twice the size of the other whereas after Handbrake the difference was nearly six times), and is there anything I can do to get the file size down to a viable size?

The log above shows you had "large file size" enabled, "[19:14:52] + 64-bit formatting" from the log. If you don't have this enabled and the file grows past 4GB, you'll get an unreadable file.

If you want smaller filesizes, use the High Profile preset. Encoding takes longer but that's the trade off you are making. Speed for size.
If you do use HIgh Profile, Disable Detelecine on the filters tab (picture settings). It'll speed things up considerabally if you have a faster >= quad core cpu.

With 1080p content, large variations are normal.

Finally, for HD content, You might try moving the quality slider to 22 from 20 as it'll keep the filesizes down a bit more reasonable.
