Handbrake causing Lion to freeze up

Each time I run handbrake after several hours I start to loose the ability to launch applications. Finder has spinning beach ball and have to force quit apps. I try to launch the apps again such as finder, address book safari and so on but they just lock up and have to force quit. It only happens when handbrake is running before I throttled CPU on handbrake it would do it more quickly but by throttling it, it usually takes 24 hours before things sart locking up. At this point I have to restart my laptop. Has anytime run into this? I thought Pathfinder was contributing to this but not so sure I ran into the same issue with finder. Thanks

I started using HB on Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on my late 2008 MBP with 8GB RAM. Letting HB run on its own without any other activity is fine. Soon as I launch a processor intensive app or one that uses the drives, like Make MKV or MetaZ or copying large files over the network, Mountain Lion MBP completely locks up. Requiring hard reboot.

So I experimented. Created a new user in OSX and started the same process with different files on HB. Locks up within minutes. I then re-installed ML with clean install. Installed HB and just MKV and MetaZ. Locks up. I then removed the 8GB ram and replaced with original 4GB ram. Started the same process and it locks up. I reverted to previous version of HB 0.9.6 and it ML MBP locks up. I haven't tried the 32 bit version, of HB. I will try that next and see if it works. I think 32 bit apps will still work with Mountain Lion.

Tried 32 bit HB, but it won't launch because of ML.

Getting about 2.06GB page outs just by running HB. Thats getting rather large and I have 8gb of RAM on my MBP.

This could be the result of some obscenely large lookahed buffer. Post your encode log.

Or just Apple's broken memory management.

I will. I'm currently running with the Activity Monitor for the day with my daily workflow to see if Apple memory management is causing these page outs. It's been 4 hours and so far no page outs. Tonight I'll run HB alone and post the log. If the MB locks up, I hope the log sticks and doesn't go bye bye on reboot.

Interesting. I did one more thing. Set Energy Saver to Better Battery, despite having the MBP plugged in for power. No lock up or freezes. Running all the test mentioned above. After a few days I have a huge page out number of 14.48GB, 3.5GB Page ins. I have 8GB RAM, and MBP has a little lag opening up applications, but so far, no hard lockup/freezes while HB 0.9.8 64bit is doing its thing.
