mkv -> mp4, HB loses subs

Post by turboyoshi »

I am transcoding a mkv to mp4 with ssa style subs and selecting the burned in option. The mp4 however, ends up with no subs. I'm guessing there's something unique to the way this file was encoded but I don't know how to troubleshoot that. Are the Fontconfig errors significant? I've seen that error with several other vids but it never seemed to matter before.

Re: mkv -> mp4, HB loses subs

Post by JohnAStebbins »

Nope, the fontconfig errors are not significant to this issue anyway. It's using a fallback font, so the style of the font may not match what the subititles requested.

Can you extract the SSA and post it so we can see if there is any anomaly in the SSA? The mkvextract line should be something like this:

Code: Select all

mkvextract tracks myfile.mkv 3:myfile.ssa

Re: mkv -> mp4, HB loses subs

That's a stumper. I merged your SSA file into another mkv here. Encoded with burned in subs to an mp4 just fine. Nothing wrong with the subtitles.

Yeah I've got some teflon coated pixels here. I'm almost curious to see how they managed that but right now it's just aggravating. I even tried merging the ssa file back in as another track and burn that one and the output still has no subs. I must have done 30 encodes in the last 3 days and this is the only one that doesn't result in a burned in mp4.

Re: mkv -> mp4, HB loses subs

I'm having the same issue... I have an MKV of The Lord of the Rings that displays forced English subs, during the Elvish scenes, just fine... I'm trying to convert the MKV to .mp4/.m4v to play on Apple TV, but I can't figure out how to preserve the forced subs.

I've selected "Foreign Audio Search (Bitmap)", which preselects "Forced Only" and "Burned In", but this does not seem to be working. I tried selecting and unselecting both "Forced Only" and "Burned In" as to encode with only one or the other checked. This resulted in no subs...

Just for kicks I've tried to select "non-forced" subs as well, English, French, etc..., and they don't seem to be carrying over either.

Any thoughts? I'm not a real techie - I'm just a plug and play user of Handbrake. ...have been for a long time and love the solution. This is the first time I'm trying to encode with subs (forced subs) and just can't seem to figure it out.

Any layman's termed assistance would be greatly appreciated.

In my case, I can only suspect there's something in the way the video stream in the mkv was encoded that screws HB up. I got another mkv encoded by a different group and everything worked fine. I gave up on the original encode.

In your case, it could be the same problem I had or there could be some other issue going on here like the subs might be in a format such as srt or tx3g which are not burnable. The activity log from your encode will tell us if that is the problem.

If you made the mkv yourself from a dvd, you should try transcoding a new mkv/mp4 using the universal presets or something generic and see if that works.

Thanks, turboyoshi. I'll see if I can get the activity log posted.

Here is my Activity log. I was not/am not sure which components of it are helpful so I copied it entirely.

I only ran 1 chapter of the movie... will this affect anything negatively? ...I mean, it's not like I need to encode the whole movie in order for subs to encode or anything, right?

Thanks,

Re: mkv -> mp4, HB loses subs

Post by turboyoshi »

I don't have enough experience to tell for sure but it looks to me like the sub format is not ssa/ass though which means it can't be burned in. One note: selecting the "forced" subs just tells HB to scan for subs that show up less than 10% of the dialogue and use that. If in the chapter you're encoding, the subs show up more than 10%, it's not considered foreign and gets skipped. (I think that's how it works, maybe an expert will chime in here and tell me otherwise.) So, if you're manually selecting the sub track, don't select forced subs, unless you do the whole movie, where, I assume elvish is spoken less than 10% of the movie but I haven't seen it so don't know.

HandBrake does not support Blu-ray subtitles yet. This seems completely unrealted to the first post, however.

Regarding the original issue, SSA burn-in can fail if there is no embedded font in the source MKV.
While this is more often an issue under Windows, it can also happen under OS X.

The easiest workaround would be to just embed a TrueType font file (.ttf) of your choice in the source using mkvmerge:

Thanks for responding, Rodeo. In my case, even if the requested fonts are not embedded in the mkv, wouldn't HB just use the fallback from fontconfig? Based on JohnStebbins response, this is what I thought would happen. It did occur to me to try and change the fonts but I haven't figured out how yet.

Yes, but it doesn't always work.
