Thor has been reported on many forums as having new copy protections that need work to be defeated.

You may need to use dedicated, paid, ripping software to defeat this, not just the freebie through VLC and this seems to be happening to many new titles.

What is the best paid app? The Mac App store has a few but they have pretty bad reviews.

MakeMKV is just about due for an update. Hopefully it would have the new workarounds, but it might be the next version.

I had no issues using AnyDVD HD (for the blu-ray version).

There is a 30 day free trial (not crippled in any way other than time limitation).

AnyDVD for Windows :-)

There's basically three well thought of programs, two of them are Windows only (AnyDVD, DVDFab) and available in "transparent" mode which just make the disk look unprotected to all applications (the most convenient way). The last is multi-platform (MakeMKV) including Mac OSX, requires an intermediate step (mkv file) and is currently in free-while-in-beta mode, that could end at any time but it's already been in that mode for years so no one really knows.

Since people say MakeMKV can't handle that title due to no recent releases that just leaves the two others, of which AnyDVD HD is usually considered the "golden standard" so I think that's what most people would recommend even if it's marginally more expensive than DVDFab. Someone already mentioned that AnyDVD HD does work, another argument.

Not sure if AnyDVD or DVDFab Passkey (their transparent mode version) runs correctly in a VM, but I think both have trials you can use to check it. Both are running 20% off campaigns at the moment if it works in a VM or you're willing to boot Windows when you hit one of the these Blu-Rays, but using the trial mode should work if you don't hit any more of these or MakeMKV gets updated soon.

AnyDVD HD works for me (Windows 7 guest, Mac OS X 10.6 host, VMWare Fusion 3). Of course for DVD sources (like the OP's), the HD-enabled version is not required.

Regarding Thor specifically, the very latest AnyDVD (released yesterday) should support the DVD now, if I am not mistaken. The Blu-ray disc was already supported in an earlier version.

just copy and paste the contents of the DVD to hard drive.. then in handbrake navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder.. press "Open" from there and that works..

I don't think your statement is correct without some decryption software running!

What have I been wasting my time with special apps to copy DVDs for???

Now that I've been pointed in the right direction, I'm getting my money back for AnyDVD HD! Those crooks!

Oh, now back to reality...

This is for info. I expect that these problems have been previously identified.

I had the same problems as others have had in ripping the Thor DVD. I obtained an ISO. This plays fine, all the way through, using VLC (on Ubuntu Linux).

However, Handbrake rips the earlier part of the DVD (through chapter 12) but chapter 13 and beyond is bad. Handbrake does not exit even though it reports 100% completion. The system monitor shows all CPUs running at better than 85%. I've done this on two machines (both x86-64) with the same results. One version of Handbrake was svn3803 (x86_64). The other was v0.9.5 (x86_64). I ran HandBrakeCLI. It eventually completed after producing a file that was 22+ GBytes. These files would play up to chapter 12. At chapter 13, the video was badly distorted.

Best of luck with this.

If you are able to scan the source (unlike the OP),
you'll want to check whether you're encoding the correct title: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=15874

DVD Player.app is sometimes more reliable for this than VLC.

Same thing is happening to me all of the sudden. I'm just trying to digitize all my DVDs into iTunes to get rid of the discs. All are standard DVDs, not blu ray. Trying to add THOR today. Maybe it's a new dvd with new protection I'm unaware of?

This should have the fix: [pulled]

You'll need a 64-bit capable Mac, and a 64-bit build of VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html (get either the 32/64 or 64-bit build)

Please post the Activity Log, whether it works or not.
