Mismapped channels under Lion (10.7)

Posted: Wed Jul 13, 2011 3:11 pm
by DJRumpy
Verified with 0.9.4, 0.9.5, and two nightly builds (4083 and 4103). The center channel is being output in the RF channel. Reverting to Snow Leopard using these same versions give the expected channel outputs.

Does it also happen with Core Audio AAC?

Edit: another question - what are you using for playback? Did you try encoding under Lion, and playing the output under Snow Leopard?

Let me do a quick test on the AAC (CoreAudio) and see. I'm fairly certain I tried both AAC and HE-AAC and saw the same issue but I want to verify that as it's been a few days. I'll have to wait for a current BD encode to finish so it may be a few hours. For playback, I tried two Mac's and an Apple TV 2. The macs were an iMac 27" and a Mac Mini (2009). The iMac was using the stock built in speaker setup (iMac 27") and for the other mac, I played it back using a Mac Mini using the SPDIF optical out to a 5.1 tuner and Plex. Both machines exhibited the RF channel audio issue. When played via Apple TV (which dumbs it down to Stereo since the audio was AAC), it also exhibited the same issue with almost all of the audio going out of the right speaker.

I encode the same movie on both SL and Lion with the same versions and the problem only appears when the movie is encoded on Lion. Encodes on Lion that were later played back in SL also exhibited the issue. I also tried grabbing an DTS instead of a 5.1 source from a few BD's and also saw the same issues, seemingly regardless of the type of source. I've since gone back and re-encoded all of these under SL using 4103 and they are fine in all of the above configurations. This definitely appears to be specific to Lion for some reason.

Let me know if you need anything else.

It appears to be a bug in Apple's channel remapping functions under Lion. There's a patch that replaces them with HandBrake's built-in remapping - hasn't been committed yet as it needs a bit of testing.

So at this point I don't need to do any more testing? Just let me know and thanks!

Well, at least one dev has been able to reproduce the issue, so we shouldn't need your help at this point. The fix might not land in the nightlies for Lion's release, but it should be available shortly after.

Is there an RSS feed for the nightly builds? About the only thing holding me back from using Lion as my primary at this point is this bug so I want to keep an eye out for the fix when it happens.

Thanks

The svn revision is part of the disk image's name. 4128 < 4132, so no. You'll have to wait until tomorrow's nightly.
