Yikes. .mkv to .mp4 with 5.1 no re encode.

Post by simonpickard »

Hello all,

So I've been happily ripping my bluray movies and storing them as .mkv files, then using plex to play.
I've also been reading up about how a new apple tv 3 might be coming up that allows 1080p (would be perfect for the bedroom, other rooms in the house).

But I think I've made a big mistake going the .mkv road and not using the appleTV 2 preset and upping the res to 1080p when ripping.

My question is..

Can I convert my 1080p .mkv files over to .mp4, keep the 5.1 sound tracks but not re encode (so no quality loss).

Please don't tell me I have to rip and encode all my Bluray disks again!? :(

Any help would be most welcomed!

Regards,
Si

Si:

Can you send me a small sample of one of your 1080p files, so that I can experiment on it for you (and me, too!).

Basically you want to move the audio and video from the mkv container to the mp4 (m4v) container. I suspect that the legacy program VisualHub (based upon the ffmpegx program) may do this easily.

You can use YouSendIt for free for small files. Send it to my screenname at luckymail.com.

As will Subler, as Rodeo mentioned above.

I have used Subler to remux (that is, repackage) mkv to mp4 on many occasions.

Cool I've give that a try, and it'll keep the 5.1 audio also?

Only thing I'm thinking is that some of the .mkv's are DTS not AC3. I'm guessing those ones will fail?

Downloaded Subler and it is sure easy to use for this purpose...

Does allow the change AC-3 to AAC, but does not seem to allow for both; unless both already exist.

HI there,

So I've given Subler and tired to get this to work.

I open my .mkv, then tried saving as a video and a movie, .m4v and .mp4.

It saved the file fine, seemed about the right size, but I can't get any apps to open it. Quicktime just says "This is not a movie file"

Can you please let me know the steps you are taking to get this to work?

Simon

Does the file exceed 4 GB in size? If so, select "64 bits chunk offset" and it should work.

Hiya,

So yep the file did exceed 4Gb in size. I used the 64 bit chunk offset and that did indeed work fine so thanks for that.

My issue is that when I open the resulting file in QT I get a weird beeping audio track.
Also when I try and play the file on an apple tv it doesn't allow it. I'm guessing the settings I used for the .mkv aren't correct for the apply tv.

Looks like I'm going to have to rip everything again! Doh! :)

Simon
