m4v missing duration and wont play in iTunes but fine in QT

Post by knemonic »

Hey all,

Having a little problem here. I am trying to transcode a large file, 11h 17m using Handbrake's Apple TV 2 profile. I have tried twice and get the same results in iTunes, it shows no duration/length and iTunes cannot play it (you see a quick black screen then back to the library view), though the file will play fine in Quicktime.

I tried transcoding the file in Compressor with the Apple TV profile, which upped it to HD size (original source is DVD quality) and that version worked fine in iTunes, which leads me to conclude there is a problem in Handbrake. I would be fine with the Compressor version, but the blacks in it are way way too dark and portions of it are very grainy, which leads me to conclude Handbrake is probably the best h.264 encoder out there. I really want to get HB to transcode this for me to get the best possible quality.

The source file is DVCPRO 50 with 48khz Uncompressed Audio.

Should I try using another profile in HB, or convert the source file to another raw video type (like ProRes) in mpeg streamclip then try HB again?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Tim

Try remuxing it in Subler and save it out with 64 bit times support. You'll also need 64 bit chunk (aka "large file support") for it to work.

If I remember correctly from the quicktime-dev mailing list QuickTime 7 is limited to 31bit durations, so with the timescale HandBrake uses you can have ~6 hours of video.

iTunes 10.2.1 on Mac OS X 10.6.7 uses AVFoundation so it might play it.
