iTunes + 1080p + AC3 + Apple TV 2 + Projector.

Post by simonpickard »

Hello everyone,

So I just read that iTunes can handle 1080p. I have an apple tv gen 2 which I know is only 720p output (for now). I also have a 1080p Projector conected to a mac mini.

Hear's what I'd love to do..

1. Store all my movies as 1080p in iTunes with AC3 + ACC audio.

When played on the Apple TV they will output as 720p.
When played via my Mac Mini to my projector it'll play full 1080p with AC3 digital sorround audio.

I've done some tests but just wanted to get the boards feedback. Firstly is this possible? Secondly what preset would you use?

I'd love some help with this.

Regards,
Simon

iTunes supports bundling an HD and SD version together, but not two HD versions. You'll have to have seperate files, one 1080p and one tv2 compatible.

Hi there,

"You'll have to have seperate files, one 1080p and one tv2 compatible."
I'm not sure that's the case. I've read on this forum that the apple TV can play 1080p itunes files. It just downres's them, so as far as I know I'd just need 1 1080p .m4v, etc.

What's an "iTunes file"?

I think you can stream from iTunes it if you lie about the level (since iTunes won't let you steam anything higher than level 3.1 and a 1080p picture won't fit in level 3.1) but it still stutters on playback.

I'd use the tv2 preset in the nightly, increase the width, and stick level=31 in the advanced x264 options.

From what I can recall, there was a lot of hope when the AppleTV v2 was initially released that this would be the case. However, I believe subsequent testing all but elminated this as a viable option as the AppleTV had trouble with playing back the 1080p content reliably.

A file iTunes can play.

I think I'll do some more testing. Startin with the appleTv preset sounds like a good idea.
What does level 3.1 mean?

iTunes won't let you sync them. Testing shows it doesn't appear to impose restrictions on streaming (at least when streaming to an ATV 2). That hack should be unnecessary.

Anyway, as NightStorm pointed out, testers have found that, regardless of the options used, the ATV 2 couldn't play 1080p content reliably.

That's for the AppleTV v1. The nightly builds have an "AppleTV 2" preset. This is what mduell's talking about.

Thanks for the reply, yep sorry I meant the ATV 2 preset- that's what I've been using. I'm going to try this using the full 1080 width and report back. Fingers crossed. I don't mind the apple TV only playing a downresed 720p version of this (it's pluged into a smallish TV anyhow) but if I can have only 1 file where as at the moment I have to store a 1080p .mkv file for the projector and a 720p .m4v file for the apple tv 2, I'd be VERY happy! :)

As has been pointed out already, it won't work. The A4 processor, while impressive, doesn't quite have the horsepower to reliably rescale 1080p -> 720p in real time. Even sacrificing high profile encode options to ease the decoding workload was unable to alleviate this.

I know there was a lot of tests carried out with 1080p as soon as the ATV2 came out, but I haven't seen any results from testing after the recent software update which seemed to cure most of the 720p frame skipping.

Also, I wonder if an update to enable native 1080p output would help (to stop 'wasting' cpu cycles downscaling to 720p).

You mean from Apple?
I'm not sure we'll see that for a while- i.e. will only happen once iTunes starts using 1080p and that's not going to happen for a while I'm guessing due to the pressure 1080p would put on streaming.

Hopefully we'll see a jailbreak hack to allow it though. That would be great!

Yes, an update from Apple.

I too don't think iTunes will get 1080p rentals for a few years yet (maybe when the successor to h264 arrives and files get smaller/more bandwidth available). However, forcing a 720p-only output is a bit limiting - and possibly an area where iOS hasn't yet been modified from the iPhone/iPad to take advantage of the ATV. Even the ATV1 had a 1080p output to enable upscaling. A 24 fps option would be nice too.

Yep I agree with all the above, hopefully the jailbreakers will help us out with this over the coming months as they get to grips with the ATV2 more! :)

For those of us who are not on the nightly builds, what is the best option to get optimum resolution on the Apple TV when ripping video from a Standard Definition DVD?

High Profile preset is optimal and safe for DVD sources.

Why wouldn't you use a nightly?

There seems to be a lot of people on this thread saying it can't be done, however I have found the Apple TV2 to be quite reliable with 1080p .m4v. Here is what I do.

1. I rip a Bluray with MakeMKV. DVDFab also works great with the latest nightlys.
2. I use the Apple TV2 preset with a few changes. I change the framerate to same as source only because I don't understand the peak framerate and if it would make the video out of sync if I added subtitles later.
3. I change the constant quality to 22.
I have found them to play without any stuttering, and they look great to my unskilled eyes on a 72 inch 1080p TV even though they are output at 720p.

Now if I did anything with subler version .10, they wouldn't play unless I optimized them using either subler on mac, or drax on windows.
You mention a mac mini. I have noticed some of my videos from different sources/encodes would take a long time to start streaming to my macbook pro using homesharing, even if they played right away on my apple tv2. I noticed that optimizing fixed this issue as well. Because of this, I now optimize all my videos regardless of source/encode using batch file for drax.
Also, in the interest of futureproofing, vobsubs don't seem to break apple tv2 or itunes compatibility, they just won't play. I haven't exactly watched an entire movie encoded this way, but I have watched maybe 5 minutes to make sure they work. When I'm done setting up my hackintosh, I'll encode Iron Man 2 and watch the whole thing just to make sure.

PFR means "Same as source, but capped". It will drop frames or adjust duration if two frames are too close (e.g. less than 33.37 ms apart if using 29.97 fps), but never add frames. If your source is < 29.97 fps, it will behave exactly like "Same as source".

You haven't indicated you're changing the picture size to 1080. Can you post an encoding log?

Oops, forgot that part. I do raise the video up to 1080, make the changes I mentioned earlier and then I actually save it as a preset with "use picture size source maximum".
PFR means "Same as source, but capped". It will drop frames or adjust duration if two frames are too close (e.g. less than 33.37 ms apart if using 29.97 fps), but never add frames. If your source is < 29.97 fps, it will behave exactly like "Same as source".
Thank you, I will start using that then then. I'll start my encode now, and post later today how it came out. Maybe I'll post an encode log and after double checking the forum rules to make sure it is ok, post a small video sample.

Great stuff, hope you can share a video file, would be fantastic to see the quality you're getting. Also.. Is there anyway you can share your preset?

Sure, download here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/941985/HB_Export.plist
This is the Apple TV2 preset with only the following changes:
  1. In "picture settings" change "width" to maximum: 1920
  2. Change the "constant quality" to RF:22. This can changed to your preference. Higher the number, the lower the quality/file size/bitrate. Lower = higher quality/file size/bitrate. Just note that if you go too low, the Apple TV2 might have trouble. Most people in the forums recommend 22, so that's what I use.
I'm watching this encode right now, and I'm an 1:40 into the movie. Fast forward and rewind will cause issues. Other than that, playback has been perfect. Even chapters seem to work.
The trick to making it work best on Apple TV2 and on Macs, is to optimize the file using either Subler for mac http://code.google.com/p/subler/ or Drax for windows http://www.arlt.eu/blog/projects/drax/
Here is what I've noticed about optimizing the files:
  1. On the Apple TV2, they load about equally as fast. Homesharing, the the optimized file starts playing 3 times faster! I've some DVD encodes take up to 2 minutes to start playing with homesharing before optimization, where they would start almost right away after being optimized.
  2. Fast forward and rewinding works alot better.
Also, I'm playing all my files over a Wireless N network

Hi there,

What does subler do? I'm looking on the website and it seems to be for adding subs? How does that make it play 3 times faster? Does it re encode anything? Change quality?

Simon

No, it can (among other things) "Optimize" an MP4 file (same as HB's "Web optimized" checkbox) - which basically re-interleaves audio and video and moves the index to the beginning of the file rather than the end.
