BluRay artefacting advice

Post by Bobcat37 »

Hey all, working on shrinking my bluray MKVs from MakeMKV to a more reasonable size with handbrake, and noticed some artefacting issues with my conversion of Coraline... was looking for any ripping advice on improving this. Here's my encode log:

Here's my options string (it's pretty high-profile):
rc-lookahead=50:ref=4:b-pyramid=strict:b-adapt=2:me=umh:subq=9:merange=32:direct=auto:analyse=all

And here's a picture of the normal version without artefacts:
Image

And here's a picture of the transcoded version with artefacts, notice particularly in the bottom left area around the spiderwebs:

Any advice on my settings and if this can be improved would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried the encode in another player?

Huh, well isn't that curious. I was using VLC but booted it up in Quicktime X and that section actually looked better, the scrambled web was gone (although the sky in the background was a tiny bit more 'striped' where the colors fade from dark to light). Didn't realize it could be how the player was interpreting the file, learn something new every day I guess.

[edit] Here's a screencap of that corner running via Quicktime to show:
Image

Well in that case I guess no key tweaks recommended to the settings? I'll have to load this MKV onto my HTPC and see how that plays through the TV. (It's XBMC, not sure if that's somewhat based around VLC or not?) Thanks Ted.

[edit 2: PS - funny thing just noticed, a rip I did of the I Love You Man DVD is giving me the opposite problem... when using QX the first 5 seconds are completely scrambled, when using VLC it runs fine... ridiculous)
