noise at start after conversion to Apple TV

Post by PCKid »

I've been converting all my mkv tv shows ready for my iPad. After doing so a lot of them now have a nasty crack noise right at the start. I fI redo them to Apple TV using Visualhub they are fine. Would rather use Handbrake now as it is always evolving whereas Visualhub, brilliant as it was, is now finished.

Can you supply a sample of a source that has this problem. Can't reproduce it here. Sounds like the first 30 sec should be enough.

You would only need the first 10 seconds but how do I clip a m4v file? I know how to do do mpeg files using TMPENC on my old PC but m4v on the Mac I've never done before.

You said your source is mkv files correct? I would need a clip from the source. mkvextract can do that i believe.

Tried the MKVextract. Too hard to see how to use it. Guess I'll leave Handbrake alone and go back to Visualhub. Have no problems with that at all. Leave Handbrake for DVDs. Doesn't seem to like mkvs.

AFAIK, the right program to use is MKVMergeGUI (it has a splitting option).

I hace the exact same issue when ripping X-files for my Apple TV, but nothing else, will let you know if I come up wirh a solution. It seems series and/or disk specific.

I'm having the same problem too.
Here's a sample of the opening few seconds:

Another thing I have just noticed, it only does this on files with two audio tracks. The file above has a commentary track that I also included when converting it. Strangely, the commentary track doesn't have the glitch. Any ideas?

If you're on the computer you used to encode, all activity logs are stored to disk. Instructions for finding them and posting them can be found in the big red box at the top of this page.

OK, I ripped it again and had the same problem.
Here's the file:

Not, I trimmed it down afterwards so the file wasn't as big. The glitch is still in the file.

Here is the Activity Window info:

One other thing, I had ripped the DVD to my Mac using MacTheRipper and created the .m4v file from the VIDEO_TS file. This shouldn't cause a problem, right?

Thanks in advance for any help.

First off -- try upgrading to the brand new version of handbrake 0.9.5, it incorporates numerous fixes and updates. That might fix the problem. Second, are you using the old free version of MTR (2.6.6)? It's known to have problems. Try encoding directly from the DVD and see if it has the same issue, though I doubt that's the cause of this particular problem.

We need a sample of the source.

Note: this is a long standing issue, but none of the devs who could fix this bug have been able to reproduce it reliably - which makes it harder to fix.
