Elgato Turbo.264 HD, iPad and more
Hi,
A new user here. And of course I got a lot of questions, but manly only a couple.
1. Can I make use of my Elgato Turbo.264 HD to speed up Conversation? XviD -> iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch?
2. Is there any "good" iPad preset to be found?
Thanks for your time.
Best regards
Rasmus, Denmark

No and no, there is no ipad preset however,
All of HandBrakes presets will work with the iPad with the following exceptions:
Normal and High profile will need their output resolution reduced to 720p if your encoding HD content.

And the framerate must not exceed 30 fps.s55 wrote:No and no, there is no ipad preset however,

the turbo.264 really is a great product, but if you want control over your export settings, go for handbrake despite the lack of turbo.264 support.
While we are on the topic, would it be possible for handbrake to support the turbo.264 device at all? It's a great product and I would love to be able to take advantage of it.

God no. It sucks.

I agree.nightstrm wrote:God no. It sucks.
My testing with one of those devices yielded no improvements at all when comparing Quicktime 7 MKV to MP4 to Handbrake MKV to MP4. It was sometimes a lot slower than Handbrake consuming around the same amount of CPU as Handbrake. I returned the unit after that.
Re: Elgato Turbo.264 HD, iPad and more
After Handbrake went 64bit, turbo264 is no longer useful for me. I used to only use the turbo264 for quick encoding on-the-go, but still use Handbrake for iTunes storage. Now Handbrake is so fast, I'd just rather have better quality video all the time.

Re: Elgato Turbo.264 HD, iPad and more
handbrake time to encode eyetv 1080p recording(21 minutes, 2.2gb) to appletv preset -33 minutes.
TurboHd-9 minutes to appleTv preset.
I guess "fast" is a relative term.
Handbrake is wonderful for DVD's, but I use other stuff for everything else.
I want a quick rip for iphone-turbohd or videomonkey(metatagging ftw).

Re: Elgato Turbo.264 HD, iPad and more
The presets may not be equal so it is not a good speed comparison. The legacy AppleTV preset was faster too, but lower quality.
Re: Elgato Turbo.264 HD, iPad and more
Um, and so the TurboHD has the same preset that HB has to make this an even comparison ? I think not.nekogami13 wrote:handbrake time to encode eyetv 1080p recording(21 minutes, 2.2gb) to appletv preset -33 minutes.

Yep, both outputting 960x540 h.264 video.
Re: Elgato Turbo.264 HD, iPad and more
The Turbo.264's compression efficiency is nowehere near that of the AppleTV preset. By using faster x264 options, you can easily double the speed compared to the AppleTV preset.nekogami13 wrote:Yep, both outputting 960x540 h.264 video.
Re: Elgato Turbo.264 HD, iPad and more
Because clearly that's all there is to video encoding, dimensions and the name of the encoder.nekogami13 wrote:Yep, both outputting 960x540 h.264 video.

Using the appletv preset, doesn't handbrake default to the most efficient and fastest settings to achieve it?
If not, why not?
I am not at my computer at this moment-so I cannot compare the bitrate, etc.
My personel experience is the turbohd is faster then handbrake when converting my HD content.
I prefer videomonkey for non-DVD stuff because of metatagging.

Re: Elgato Turbo.264 HD, iPad and more
Settings can't be both fast and efficient. Fast settings are less bitrate-efficient, i.e. they result in less quality for the same bitrate. Slow settings are more bitrate-efficient. Handbrake relies on the x264 encoder, which retains a high quality on default settings. If you modified the settings in Handbrake to faster ones, you'd probably be able to match the speed of Turbo.264 and produce higher quality video. Conversely, it's pretty unlikely you can get Turbo.264 to match x264's quality, even turning up the settings to maximum.nekogami13 wrote:Using the appletv preset, doesn't handbrake default to the most efficient and fastest settings to achieve it?

Re: Elgato Turbo.264 HD, iPad and more
Because the Apple presets were designed to hold quality and size to a higher standard than encoding speed. You can remove some of the advanced x264 features to increase encoding speed if you want, but you'll sacrifice size (and possibly quality, depending on what exactly you change).nekogami13 wrote:Using the appletv preset, doesn't handbrake default to the most efficient and fastest settings to achieve it?

Re: Elgato Turbo.264 HD, iPad and more
The current AppleTV preset does not produce Main Profile H.264. What version of HandBrake are you using?nekogami13 wrote:Here is more info:

Re: Elgato Turbo.264 HD, iPad and more
If you're OK with tripling the video bitrate you can make Handbrake go a lot faster with simpler/less efficient encoding.
