Kernel Panics with Handbrake

Post by slicktar »

I intstalled the newest version of Handbrake on my system. (Macbook Pro ,233 Ghz Intel Core Duo/ 2 GB 667 Mhz DDR@ SDRAM/mac os 10.4.9) I compressed one dvd with no problem at all. About 17 minutes into compressing the 2nd dvd Handbrake froze and my computer screen went dim and a message came up saying that I should restart my computer, which I have found out is a Kernel Panic. I did that and upon trying to start Handbrake again the same thing happened. Now the problem has started happening frequently. I even un-installed Handbrake and all the files in preferences and library, and my system is still doing the same thing. Since my system has an Intel chip, could this be the beginning of a new Mac virus? I've read previous posts and you say that Kernel Panics are usually hardware related but accordin to Apple that is rarely the case. Kernel Panics are usually SOFTWARE and CODE related
I LOVED the previous version of Handbrake for my Powerbook. Never had one problem Now this, OH NO!

If the problem occurs when HB is not on your system, I fail to see how HB could be causing it.

Couldn't something that is written in the code be a virus? I saw the same response to someone else that was having the same problem. I also saw some that a few people that got the software thru versiontracker had the same problem. I don't see how that many people having the same problem could be a coincidence.
Again I loved the version I had on my powerbook.

No, and I'd appreciate if you didn't libel the project like that.

HB does not have open anonymous check-in, so Joe Random Script Kiddie has no ability to commit malicious code. Versiontracker links to our download site. So when you suggest there's a virus in the binary, you are implying that titer, dynaflash, maurj, prigaux, sr55, johnallen, saintdev, clee, rhester, benlake, or I put it in there.

I'm not implying that at all. I'm saying that some people are having problems with the software me included, and I'm ASKING if in some crazy way something like that could have happened. And at the same time making you aware of a problem.
I saw your response to one person saying that it must be hardware related and Apple says Kernel panics are ususally software related.
I had to take my computer to the mac store today and get the system software re-installed.

If you are experiencing kernel panics when HandBrake is not running (or even installed), you are not having a HandBrake problem. If it is software-related, it must be another software package, but in any event, your best bet is Apple support.

Again I love HB. Help me figure out what the problem is.

We can't begin to help you understand what the problem is, all we can do is help you narrow the field by assuring you that it is not HandBrake. Beyond that, you will likely need to engage either Apple technicians or a local guru to assist.

take a look at your panic.log file located in HD /Library/Logs/, i had some panics and found some interesting entries that were referring to my blue tooth drivers, i turned blue tooth off and no more panics.

anyways, point is, the log can be useful sometimes. good luck !

I have a feeling you misinterpreted something you were told or else it wasn't explained well by them. Kernel panics are typically related more to hardware drivers. Yes, drivers are software too, but hardware drivers come very close to the kernel in order to do what they do. They simply need a greater degree of access to it. It's therefore far more common to see KPs when hardware or the driver is having a "bad hair day."

In short, I'd really look somewhere else first. And in my opinion your virus comment, however well intentioned perhaps, was irresponsible without simple proof. I realize you may not have understood the extent to which the devs go in keeping HB safe, but in the end yours was still just conjecture.

I clicked on your thread because I had a KP earlier today, and Handbrake had been one of the things grinding away. So yeah, I was curious. And I will admit that for a second I wondered about HB's possible involvement. But I don't in any way think it was related directly to HB. I had some other processes going on, although none seemingly directly related to some hardware I was using (which I realize, casts doubt on what I said up top).

But I do know this: I beat on my PowerMac relentlessly and run lots of things concurrently and never reboot unless something requires it. So I shed no tears if I get a KP twice a year or so.

And that task Handbrake had been working on when all the Mac's fans went [Censored]? I redid it the same way and it came out perfectly.

I wonder then if there could be a problem with the dvd/cd drive itself or a combination of HB and the drive. Maybe, maybe not but anyway it was corrected with an archive and re-install of my system software. Maybe I'll just wait for the finished version to re-install HB.

As far as the virus comment, you're right is saying that it was conjecture. I was trying to guess or at least stimulate the software developers to check to see if a virus had attached itself somehow to their code. With the little bit of understanding that I have about software and computers I know that virus mutate and wreak havok and they might originate other places. I'm grasping at straws here, searching for an answer so I can use a product that has treated me well in the past.
Once and for all, in no way was I trying to imply that the developers had anything to do with it. Why would they sabotage their own product? Also, obviously the mention of a virus is a touchy subject in software land and I apologize if it offended the developers. That was not my intention. This is the last time I'll even address it.
Good luck with the final release of the product. I know it will be even better than the original. Which was one of my most valued programs. (I'm a traveling musician and Handbrake kept me from having to lug suitcases full of dvd's around the world)

This is from the Apple website about Kernel panics:

A kernel panic is a type of error that occurs when the core (kernel) of an operating system receives an instruction in an unexpected format, or that it fails to handle properly. A kernel panic may also follow when the operating system is not able to recover from a different type of error. A kernel panic can be caused by damaged or incompatible software or, more rarely, damaged or incompatible hardware.

did you check you panic.log file ? did you just ignore my post ? it helped me narrow down what was causing my kernel panics, maybe it will help you also, it takes 2 mins to open the log in a txt editor and reading an entry.

since I had the problem I had the people at the apple store re-install my system software. The problem has been fixed. They ran diagnostic tests and said the hardware was fine.
Actually I don't think I would be able to read it unless it specifically stated what caused a problem. I'll open it up and see if it's still there.

I have also been having kernal panics with ihb run a few dvd's and system becomes very unstable and panics then do a command s on boot up and clean up system works for a while but the best is to wipe system reinstall os only nothing else but ihb and the same thing happens after a few dvds. wipe reinstall os and do not use ihb and use the computer hard for video editing audio editing itunes no problems for 3 months install ihb and after a few more dvds kernal panics again it is not memory the machine is a mbp 17" 2.16, 2gb ram it has happened on all of my intel mbp I have 2 17"'s and a 15" all with 2gb ram and one 17" is a core2duo so it cannot be all 3 of my machines, I really like this software but cannot live with the kernal panics Help Please.

After all was said and done, the culprit was my logic board. my computer had up to 28 kernel panics in one day. After months of frustration and more than a few trips to the apple store, I had my logic board replaced which cured the problem. I don't know why it seemed to always happen when using handbrake. Actually it also happened when viewing Quicktime videos too. Anyway I'm glad the problem is fixed and I am using handbrake in the background while I'm typing right now with no problems. My hat is off to the developers of this great program.

KernelPanics seem mostly Hardware related. Of course when you have software that stresses the hardware - like HB bringing all cores to 99% for hours - it's more prone to show it's faults...
