No Luck Including Subtitles on the Mac

I am attempting to transfer some of my DVDs to my Apple TV. I am using the Apple TV preset in Handbrake Version 0.9.4 i386 (2009112300) on my iMac. When I select 0-English-(bitmap) I get the burned images, as expected. When I select 3-Closed Caption -(text), I get the option for English subtitles in iTunes on the iMac, but when I select the subtitles they do not appear.

Please advise on how to correct this problem.

Have you verified the CC track has content in it? It isn't unheard of for a DVD to have an empty CC track and HB isn't receiving any samples.

I can see subtitles on both the DVD Player, Mac and from my xBox. Also, I can burn in subtitles with the 0-English-(bitmap) setting. I have tried on two different commercial DVDs and got the same results.

Could the issue be with VLC handing over the subtitle text?

You didn't answer jbrjake's question. Of course the first subtitle track (the bitmap subtitle track) has subtitles; what he asked you is whether the Closed Captions track (which is the only track HandBrake can pass through to the MP4 container) is empty or not.

In other words, if you enable Closed Captioning (not subtitles) on your DVD player (or in Apple's DVD Player.app), do you see the Closed Captions or not?

I grasp the difference now. That is disappointing. Most titles do not come with CC. It would be great if there was a way to use the subtitles other than to burn them on video. Thanks for responding so quickly.

You can, if you use the MKV container.

You can also use a program like subrip (windows program ie: use bootcamp/virtual pc/parallels/vmware to run it, but this is probably pointless, many srt files can just be downloaded)to turn the vobsubs from the dvd into text (srt) which can be included into an mp4 file as an optional subtitle stream.

If subrip says it's saving the file as "unicode" that means use UTF-16 in handbrake., when it says ANSI use UTF-8.

Note that SubRip requires a Windows PC or Windows running in a virtual machine (we're in the Mac section).

There's a similar program for OS X called D-Subtitler (hasn't been updated in years and I'm not sure it works very well).

That is encouraging. I have found opensubtitles.org. Do you have a recommendation for sites to dowload srt files? Are the files that are being uploaded coming from people who have used subrip or other tools? Is the timecode synch, ie. subtitles staying in synch with playback, reliable?

I use virtualbox winxp to use subrip and mkvextract (mkvtoolnix) to extract SUP subs until new prerelease version comes out for Mac that is. I tried UTF-8 with handbrake dev ver svn3036 and tried to add the SRT to bluray encode but had no luck. Muxed the same SRT with mkvmerge and choose UTF-8 and it worked just fine so I was banging my head. Anyway after reading this tried setting it to UTF-16 in Handbrake and voila it works just fine. Thanks for the tip.

D-Subtitler is pretty awful, to be honest. It was abandoned before it had a chance to reach it's full potential. For creating SRT's on the Mac I tend to use avidemux - it's faster and more accurate, although it currently has no support for bold or italics.
