AppleTV encodes "blocky"

Post by theorracle »

I'm really not sure how to explain this very well.

The encodes I've been doing using the 0.9.4, 64-bit update have been subpar. Viewing the encodes in Quicktime or iTunes have been fine. However, when played through AppleTV (v 3.0.1), they are blocky. The below picture is a rip of my Torchwood DVD playing on AppleTV.

Image

Notice the circled area.

I'm not sure what would cause it to be different between AppleTV and simply playing it on my machine. I've tried between setting the bit rate and the constant quality options on the "Normal" preset. The AppleTV preset doesn't even seem to make a file playable by AppleTV as it never loads up.

Here's the log of the last rip I tried just using the "Normal" preset which results in the attached image.

Re: AppleTV encodes "blocky"

Post by Deleted User 11865 »

The Normal preset isn't mean to work on the AppleTV. Use the AppleTV preset instead (but not the AppleTV Legacy preset, which will also create encodes that are blocky on the ATV).

The reason for the blockiness on the AppleTV is that HandBrake's H.264 encoder (x264) now uses a new H.264 feature called weighted P-frame prediction, which the AppleTV doesn't support (unlike just about any other player or device that supports Main Profile H.264). The AppleTV preset turns that feature off.

Ah. I had been able to use the "Normal" preset in the prior version without issue. Thought that would continue to be the case. However, as I mentioned, the "AppleTV" preset results in an unplayable file (On AppleTV, not my machine). It simply doesn't load up. Also somewhat larger than I would like, but I won't complain over 300MB difference if it's better quality.

Currently, trying to rip the same track using the AppleTV preset again to get the log results if it still doesn't play.

HandBrake stores all your previous encode logs in ~/Library/Application Support/HandBrake/EncodeLogs (where ~ is your Home folder).

Very cool. Didn't know that. Here's the log of my previous rip using the "AppleTV" preset:

Frankly, I can barely read that, but, as I said, it just wouldn't load up. If it looks fine to you, rodeo, I'll try loading it up again. Deleted this rip. For all I know, I need to power cycle my Drobo.

Strange - that video should be accepted by the AppleTV. Did you rename the file to .mp4 post-encode (not a good idea)?

I did, actually. Simply because I'm overwriting current files, and changing it to MP4 means I don't need to redo the file associations in iTunes. I could do that in 0.9.3, but I guess I need to get into a different habit. I presume that AppleTV interprets MP4 ad M4V differently?

The AppleTV (and QuickTime) will not see chapters (or soft subtitles) when the extension is .mp4. Also, when the file contains an AC3 track and the extension is .mp4, QuickTime will refuse to play the file. I assume that's the reason why your encode won't play on the AppleTV as well.

Simple solution: don't rename to .mp4 :-)

Heh. Thanks. I'll find out once the new rip is done. But just to clarify, you said don't rename it "post-encode". If I give it an MP4 ext. to begin with, does that make a difference?

Nope. I just knew the encode had the .m4v extension from the log…

I have recently started doing BluRay rips with 0.9.4 and am seeing blocky video during dark scenes with the AppleTV preset, I had been downsampling the video to 720p under the constant quality of 62%. This would leave me with about a 3GB file for a 3hr movie, IMHO that is too small to be decent quality for 720p. I had previously heard anything over 62% constant quality was a waste but I'm finding that not to be the case with the AppleTV preset since it compromises bitrate for better streaming ability. I have a 640GB hard drive in my ATV so I generally don't stream video, I have personally found that constant quality at 70% provides much better video at around 5-6GB for a 3hr movie which I consider acceptable.

I had this exact same issue using 0.9.4 (32-bit) and getting blocky/pixelated encodes/output using the Normal preset...now I'm no longer using the "Normal" preset and using the ATV preset - the encodes are coming out correctly but seem to be taking a ridiculous amount of time (16 hrs for a 3hr movie). I noticed that the ATV preset checks off 'large file size' - is that necessary and would that necessarily cut down the time required ? Is there anything else that would cut down the time required ?

I noticed that the ATV preset checks off 'large file size' - is that necessary and would that necessarily cut down the time required ? Is there anything else that would cut down the time required ?
You could start with the Normal preset and just add weightp=0 to make a new custom preset, should be slightly faster than the regular Normal preset AFAIK. However, note that Normal has certain other settings that is reputed to cause problem when streaming to ATV (CABAC, significant smaller files!) and can also generate files that is too large for ATV to display (too many pixels, won't happen from DVD sources).

There a large number of differences of the two profiles, I would start with switching to Motion Estimate: Hexagon. The High Profile preset switched to Hexagon just before 0.9.4 was released based on suggestions from one of the primary x264 developers... If that doesn't help try Adaptive B-Frames=Fast and then Subpixel Motion Estimate: 6.

I would suggest you turn off them one after another and try each combination, then look at the final encode speed and size and decide if it's acceptable, there will be a size hit from disabling these options which is why I suggest you do it one at a time, I tried to give them in the order I expect them to matter but I could be wrong. Other differences in the AppleTV preset are: 8x8dct=1 (Normal=0, so ATV is slower here), bframes=3 (Normal=2), mixed-refs=1 (Normal=0).

You can encode a short section (one or a few chapters) to see the impact in encode speed/size, but also remember that if you have a laptop or other small form factor machines you need to be careful so they don't go into thermal throttling where the CPU suddenly is a lot slower (OTOH, the first & last part of a movie usually give higher encode speeds so be careful not to assume that effect is trottling). IIRC several people have reported hitting this with various Mac's but it's also happened with other machines and both Mac, Linux and Windows have many more people who's machines can handle it than people who have machines with insufficient cooling.

AFAIK the "large file size" option is needed for Apple/AppleTV/Quicktime if the file will exceed either 2GB or 4GB (not sure which of them), not sure if you're supposed to have this for non-Apple hardware too (and if it's a problem for non-Apple devices).

Large file size = >4GB.

i am having the same problem as theoracle, except i AM using the ATV preset, not the Normal one. the files play fine on the Mac through iTunes, but streamed to the ATV they are unwatchable crap. i've seen a few threads on here about this issue but in every case i have seen discussed it's an issue with someone either using the Legacy setting or the Normal one, and they are advised by other posters to use the new ATV setting. since i am already using the proper setting i really don't know where to go from here - any ideas guys? FYI the only change i have made to the ATV preset is to bump the Constant Quality up to 70%+.

thanks!

Add "weightp=0" (sans quotes) to your advanced x264 settings in your custom ATV preset.

Re: AppleTV encodes "blocky"

Post by Xero910 »

Use the

Code: Select all

 tags next time bud.

And try trashing your old presets and updating fresh. It did fix my problems. Sometimes its your source too?

Re: AppleTV encodes "blocky"

Post by Deleted User 11865 »

You're not using the AppleTV preset. The first encode (which is missing the beginning, so we can't see which settings were used) has weighted P-frame prediction enabled. The other encodes have it disabled, but you're still using a custom preset, not the built-in AppleTV preset.

Anyway, this thread has outlived its usefulness. The solution to the original issue has been posted multiple times, and the rest is pretty much off-topic. Locking.
