Can't rip UP dvd?

Post by ncsmith4 »

When I try to rip the new Up DVD, Handbrake stalls on "Scanning new source..."

It never does anything beyond that. I have the most recent versions of both Handbrake and VLC. Is this a new form of copy protection that Handbrake can't get around? Im attaching what I see when I open the Activity Window...

The most recent release is 0.9.3, but it's not the most recent version currently available... that distinction goes to our latest development snapshot. Current code includes libdvdnav which performs MUCH better with damaged or heavily protected DVDs.

I'm also having issues copying UP. I've downloaded the beta version of handbrake and updated the VLC program. It won't scan and here is the activity log:

It looks like one of the titles is tripping up the scan. Try figuring out which title is the main title by playing the disc in vlc. Play the disc and navigate to the movie. Then look at the title menu to see which title it is playing (submenu under the video menu). Then you can use handbrake's "title specific" scan. This will scan only the title you want and skip all the others which may be causing the failure.

Yes, I too am having trouble making a backup of "up". VLC seems to indicate that 27 is the correct title to start the ball rolling, but it is impossible to get there.

The open source (title specific) choice does not seem to work properly too.

When the box pops up requesting the following:

Scan title number "0" for VTS_27_1.VOB....... What number should be entered?
should this be left zero?

I have entered 27 to no avail.

Who has had any success?

Make sure to use the latest Snapshot of Handbrake and use File>Open Scource (Title Specific)>Select the Video TS file on the DVD then select title 31 in the following window. It should work, I am encoding right now. Hope this helps!!

In the US, the movie is stored on title track 63. The two shorts are stored on title tracks 73 and 74 respectively. You can figure this out using DVD Player in the Go menu ->Title, when you're playing a specific track, it will have an arrow pointed next to the currently playing title.

In the latest version of handbrake, from the file menu, "Open Scource (Title Specific)" should work by specifying one of the numbers above.

Thanks Dean and Drankin. Worked perfectly. BUT, it was Title 50 on my DVD. Learned a new trick today. I'm normally a MTR user but am now using Handbrake because of the need to put my vid's in MKV format for WD TV Live. Appreciate the help.

I'm having a problem ripping the UP dvd as well. I believe it is stored as title 50 on the dvd, but handbrake only will let me view up to title 21 when I open the Video TS file. I looked for title 31 as suggested above, but I can't seem to get that far. Any suggestions?

Hmmm,
Something I must be missing???

When the window pops up to select the source we are inputting 31, 63,73 or 74 correct?

My little cd reader just chatters and makes no sense of it.

What version are all of you using. I'm using 0.9.3, is this the correct version?
Where should I go for the correct build? or is this called snapshot here?

Thanks for all your help! I think I got it!

I did the File>Open Scource (Title Specific)>Select the Video TS file on the DVD. Then I selected just the Video_TS and didn't choose a specific VOB. When it says scan title (blank) for UP I put in 27 and then clicked open title.

That worked and I have the complete movie in the correct order.

Thanks everyone for your advice. If you still are stuck you probably are going to need the latest 64-bit version of handbrake, also known as the SVN, which is in beta and can be found in the developer section of this forum. When you have the latest SVN, if you want to rip the dvd UP, you must have the 64-bit version of VLC, which is actually, as I found out, NOT the latest version. 1.0.2 is the version you want, not 1.0.3. I'm not sure why the people at VideoLAN decided to downgrade the mac version from 64-bit to 32-bit, but the 64-bit version is perfectly fine. So when you have both of those, then you should follow the instructions from the posts above to do title specific and type in either 27, 31, 63, etc. (try each one) and it should scan.

There are (apparently nasty) bugs in VLC 1.0.2 64-bit, so VLC won't release 64-bit builds until these bugs are fixed. BTW, while there were official 64-bit builds of VLC 1.0.2, the front page always linked to the 32-bit build anyway.

Also, nothing prevents you from downloading the 32-bit HandBrake snapshot and use that with a 32-bit VLC build.

I Dont Know what you all are doing but I tried everything that everyone has suggested and I still cant get this movie right. It scans the movie now but when i try to use the titles that are suggested the whole movie doesnt rip and it still jumps scenes. i have tried 0,1,27, 31, 50, 63, 73, 74, nothing is working right. what else can I do to get this movie done right?

This is why I'm not a fan of people posting their working title numbers... as I've pointed out for nearly every DVD release using this copy protection method over the last 12 months, the correct title is never assured: there are usually several different versions of the DVD released in each market or territory, each with a different working title.
  1. Open the disc in Apple DVD Player.
  2. Start the main feature.
  3. Take note of the current title from the "Go" menu.
  4. Use this title number in Handbrake.
This takes no more than a few seconds and certainly beats making several attempts and still not getting a working encode.

I have tried using apple dvd player. it says title 90 but when i try that in handbrake it wont open that title up. it sits there scanning the and never opens up. that the reason i tried using the titles that everyone else posted. The titles they gave does rip the movie but its not the whole movie and it skips scenes.

Are you using the latest development snapshot? Are you skipping the full disc scan and using "Open (Title Specific)" instead?

I do have the latest developer build but I still get stuck on "Scanning New Source". I followed your link and downloaded that one. Using Mac OS X 10.6.2 :/. Attempting to use the 2nd method of Title Specific.
