SVN2845 Crashing on EyeTV Encode

Post by drawkward »

Handbrake has been a great tool for me and was working well at the previous version - 2829.

I have been having trouble encoding EyeTV files with the current version - 2845. The encodes start and run for a few minutes and then quit unexpectedly. The log files look similar to the ones below. The last lines of the log repeat for some time prior to crashing. I deleted most of the repeated lines due to the message size limit.

The Universal preset has also been generating some files that won't sync to my ipod. They appear to be too large - 720 x 544 at 29.97 fps.

Any help would be appreciated - I am quite new to handbrake.

Re: SVN2845 Crashing on EyeTV Encode

Post by cricker »

Hi,
I am having the exact same issue. Here is what i do, and what it comes up with..

I logged the activity, via the activity window. Here is what it came up with...
http://handbrake.fr/pastebin/pastebin.php?show=931

Just so you know what i do, just in case the activity window isn't clear.
1. i choose the source to a an .eyetv file that hasnt been edited in anyway. (it then scans the source, taking longer than normal, getting held up on the code line "[18:14:56] scan: audio 0x1: AC-3, rate=48000Hz, bitrate=448000 Unknown (AC3) (5.1 ch)" (it eventually gets there)

2. I choose the apple tv preset
3. i press the start button, with the file to be created onto my desktop.

After pressing start, it says its queue scanning title 1 of 1...

after a very long time it comes up with encoding pass 1 of 1, 0.08% complete and just sits there forever.

Any help would be great, thanks heaps!

I don't know what causes the crash yet, as I can't reproduce that. But I've found the source of the repeated sync messages:

Code: Select all

[23:12:11] sync: 551 minute time gap in audio 0 - dropping buf start 2977507947, next 0
When an audio is seen first in these streams, the stream timing struct gets initialized with

Code: Select all

st->last = buf->renderOffset - st->average
This would be ok if there were actually a previous packet. But in the case of the first packet, it results in a fairly small scr_offset that causes large start times (start = pts - scr_offset). Things start up nicely with video because there is special initialization code for the video stream timing that sets the initial st->last = -st->average (i.e. the last frame happened in negative time). So the resulting initial scr_offset is very large and gives us appropriately small start times.

This patch fixes my test case
http://handbrake.fr/pastebin/pastebin.php?show=933

The stream timing code is pretty intricate. I looked at it carefully and I'm pretty sure this won't have unwanted side effects. But I'm still feeling a little uneasy. van, if you're listening, what do you think?

EDIT: On IRC, Rodeo confirmed my suspicion about how the crash happens. The bad audio timestamps are causing the muxer to buffer vast amounts of data until we run out of memory.

1. Thanks for the quick attention to the issue. I will look for the next SVN snapshot.

I also found the method on the following page as a work around, adding an extra step:
http://wallybarthman.wordpress.com/bria ... -solution/

2. Should the iPod Universal preset be generating videos at 720 x 544 at 29.97 fps? This appears to be too large for most iPods according to this thread:

Here's a minor update to my patch that covers what I think is a *very* unlikely scenario.
http://handbrake.fr/pastebin/pastebin.php?show=935
The issue would be with the sequence:
  • first video packet
    pcr change
    first audio packet
In this circumstance, the initial offset to the first DTS has been accounted for in the scr_offset when processing the first video packet. The previous patch would have set the initial "last" audio packet to a negative value which would have factored this initial offset to DTS in a second time.

I was having this problem with a few HD-DVD encodes this evening... the above patch resolved the issue for me as far as I can tell (the encode started... which is a good start).
