AppleTV Issues: Video Format Not Recognized

Post by jrg »

Also submitted this to the Apple Discussion forums: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jsp ... &stqc=true

OK. Prior to the last Apple TV update, all was well: I was able to rip DVDs (both home DVDs and commercial DVDs that I own) with Handbrake using Handbrake's AppleTV preset and was able to sync them or stream them to my AppleTV. And there was much celebration.

And then...

The last AppleTV update.

All DVDs I ripped prior to the update continue to sync/stream to my AppleTV. All ripped (with Handbrake) DVDs whether home or commercial (again, DVDs I purchased) since the update do not show up in AppleTV--they play perfectly well in iTunes on my host computer (dual proc G5), but when trying to sync, I get an error saying the above subject line (even though I never changed anything in my Handbrake settings; the only difference is the AppleTV update). When I try to stream them, they do not appear in my movies collection.

What's up? I am wasting entirely too much of my time trying to figure this out.

I restored my AppleTV to factory settings, but mysteriously, the update downloads in the background (without me initiating it) and installs.

I'm not trying to pirate anything; I have a large DVD collection that I would like to access without having to get up and physically browse through my library (and I'd like to free up living space by putting the DVDs into storage and still have ready access to my media).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

You didn't modify the Apple TV preset to discard the AAC audio track, by any chance? Seems with every other aTV update, files with the AC3 track only break.

Have you recently tried out the dev snapshot, then reverted to the 0.9.3 release? 0.9.3 -> snapshot auto-updates the built in presets, reverting does not - you'll need to update them manually.

If not, please post an activity log for one of the post upgrade encodes and we'll take a look on the off chance something's gone awry.

Another thing you could try - admittedly a longshot given that what you've said above - is to try removing the offending files from your iTunes library then syncing the Apple TV, then re-adding the file to iTunes' library and syncing again. The problem could be in the iTunes Library data.

I've found that that sometimes the message about 'the format is not recognised' actually means 'something's gone squiffy with the iTunes Library and I can't FIND the file'

This has happened to me once or twice when I've changed some tags on a file before the Apple TV has finished syncing.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

The encode I did last night using the AppleTV preset was able to be seen by the AppleTV, so the issue isn't Handbrake. Not sure why the others still aren't able to be seen by the AppleTV (but can be played in iTunes). I'm re-encoding one of them to see if that fixes it. The removal, sync, re-add, sync didn't work. Very strange.

Anyway, thanks for all the help! I guess it was much ado about nothing. Oh, and Apple deleted my thread in their discussion forum as it seems I violated the terms of service.

Of course you did, you're only supposed to buy video content from iTMS... :P

The issue continues...I re-encoded one of the offending DVDs using the exact same Handbrake settings I used to encode a DVD that the aTV was able to see and, once again, the aTV doesn't see it, but it plays fine in iTunes...

I have the output from the activity log if that would be helpful. It's long, though. I'll paste it here and the admins/mods can edit it out as appropriate:

I am not 100% sure how to read the logs, but I have a feeling that the bitrate might be in cause. Can you check the videobitrate of your videos ? I believe the the ATV will not accept anything that has an average above 5000. Also I would strongly recommend to use snapshot 2845 http://handbrake.fr/snapshot.php, it uses a very efficient x264 version and has new presets for the AppleTV. I hope this will help.

It could also be frame rate. What does quicktime tell you the fps of the encoded file is?

sometimes with 9.3, I would have DVDs that ended up as a video that quicktime thought had an fps above 30, sometimes even over 40. Those will likely never play on the apple tv. If you find that quicktime is telling you the fps is over 30, I find that some combination of decomb, detelcine, and forcing the fps to 29.97 works. I never had a set fix, it seemed to vary source to source, but typically setting the fps to 29.97 worked.

If the issue is framerate-related, then specifying a constant fps should fix it. However, I'd rather suggest enabling detelecine (and leaving the framerate to "same as source"), for 3 reasons:

- the source needs it (see all the Video -> Film and Film -> Video messages in the log);

- in 0.9.3, same as source + detelecine increases init_delay, making HB less likely to split frames (which is what's causing encodes to have a higher framerate than expected);

- 0.9.3's constant fps code is buggy in that it may drop and duplicate more frames than it needs to attain the specified frame rate, resulting in an encode that's unnecessarily jerky .

Sorry for the delay in responding and thanks for all the suggestions!

The bitrate of the above encode is 3830, but the bitrate of the other encode that doesn't show up is 2054. I have other encodes that do show up with bitrates higher than 2054.

Not sure how to determine framerate via QT--I do not have QT Pro on this machine.

I just DL'ed the latest Handbrake and will try the suggestions.

Thanks again!

EDIT: Will having detelecine enabled be fine for all encodes? The current average fps of the encode is now ~7.26 on the HB status line. Is this simply a measure of the current encode and not the final product?

It gets things wrong sometimes, but reasonably rarely. Yes, that's a measure of the current encoding speed and unrelated to the playback FPS.

In QuickTime (even non-pro, IIRC), Command-I (or Window > Show Movie Inspector) should bring up the inspector, which among other things reports the framerate ("FPS:").

Hi jrg,

just stumbled over your post because I had the same problem.
Since I'm no native english-speaker I somehow lost track in the thread, to make it short: what of the many (surely all helpful) suggestions was it exactly that solved it?

Thanks,

As was pointed out above, make sure the final framerate for your encode does NOT exceed 29.97 fps - this will break AppleTV compatibility.

Force the framerate to 29.97 fps if need be.

The problem is still here.
At the first, i'm received success only in Apple TV regular mode. Legacy Apple TV write unsupported format in any FPS choices. It's menaning that i can't using 1080p mode (my origin source in this format) and i must push quality down.
Second, i received some crash when i try to choice presets menu after queue was filled for three filmes. If you need, i may send crash results.
Can you suggest something?

What is AppleTV "regular mode"? I can't quite follow what you're describing here. An activity log would go a long way.

Don't use the legacy mode anymore. The x264 codec has evolved so much in the last past few month that I would recommend to use the latest snapshot (SVN2907 I believe) , update/resync the preset. Make sure that the resolution does not exceed 1280x720 with max 24000/1001 fps. If you use a SD resolution, make sure that it stays < 29,97FPS. If you encode HD movies in 720p, the average video bitrate should not >> 5000Kbps. It will probably still sync with 5500, I was not able to determinate the exact limit. I have encoded hundreds of my DVDs and Blu-Rays and have not had any problems when keeping within those limits.

I have a ton of movies that don't seem to play any more (when I know they used to). Am I forced to re-encode them?

Could you please give more details about those movies. Bitrate, Audio tracks included, Frames per Second, Source (DVD, BD etc ...), resolution of those movies, Handbrake version used to encode them, and your current AppleTV Firmware version.

Why are you posting in an existing thread for a problem that likely isn't related and not even given the required information for support?

I apologize...I realize that on its own, that message was unclear.

It was the same message as listed above. Same message, same situation. Identical.

I did testing on my own, and it turns out that somewhere along the line AppleTV got worse at sync'ing with iTunes for streaming. I *think* it has something to do with waking up sleeping harddrives where the files actually live. Basically, if I don't watch a film for "a while", say a few days, then go back and try to watch something....depending on which harddrive it lives on it will work or give the above listed error (Video Format Not Recognized). The funny thing is, I can eventually get it to work. Sometimes it involves repeatedly trying to play, sometimes it involves going to the machine and playing from iTunes first, sometimes a restart of the AppleTV and relaunching iTunes does it. Its VERY annoying.

However, bottom line is that it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the encode, or Handbrake. Seems to be a streaming issue with the AppleTV. So if anyone else is reading this thread due to a problem on the AppleTV like this, I would focus on the connection between AppleTV & iTunes, not on an issue with Handbrake.

I believe that Nightstorm reported on this over at the Macrumors.com forums. I have a Brobo, which sequentially wakes up it's four hard drives one at a time, then proceeds to stream the movie to the AppleTV. This was not a problem until AppleTV 3.0. So, yes, it is a hardware/software bug of AppleTV; not encodes.

I usually get around the problem by simply pressing the menu button when that error appears, then trying to play again.

Yep, sounds like the drives are going to sleep and its taking a little bit of time for them to wake up. Happens all the time with my ReadyNAS.

The cost of being "green" I guess...
