Monty Python, cut off chapters

Post by sdjeff4sc »

New user, be gentle.....

I bought the complete Monty Python's Flying Circus and want to watch on my laptop and iPod. Discs one and two worked fine using MTR 2.6.6, HB 9.3, Metax on my 2009 Mini, Disc three has mixed up chapters. I then tried my PPC PB using MTR 2.6.6, HB 9.3......... Same problem, some chapters, specifically the introduction, was cut off. I find the main feature/sketches, but would really like the cartoon intro since I already have successfully encoded them for disc one and two.

After reading the thread on Adventureland, I downloaded the new development snapshot, again, the encode is successful, except there are no chapter markers (just Chapter one for the entire feature) and the introduction is still missing.

On both 9.3 and the new snapshot, I am using the ATV preset, 65%, slow de-interlace, medium de-noise, de-block 10.

All three episodes on this disc (#3) have the same problem both using 9.3 and the new development snapshot. What am I doing wrong? Or is MTR the problem? I've had the discs for several years, so I didn't think there'd be a problem, especially since discs one & two worked just fine.

Help! :(

Rip the title from disc instead of going after a VOB. The VOB you are encoding is a) incomplete and b) does not contain chapter data (because that is part of the IFO, not the VOB).

Thanks Rodney!

But, again, using MTR 2.6.6, do you mean use "Title Set Extraction", I was previously using "Full Disc Extraction"?

I'll try it.

Thanks!

Full disc extraction is preferred, but you need to point HandBrake at the VIDEO_TS directory, not a VOB within it.

Thanks again!

I was previously using "Full Disc Extraction", and then encoding individual episodes (3 per disc) one at a time using HB. When I opened the source in HB, I was onlu getting a title that was 0:01:50 long - I usually was pulling the titles that are between 20:00 to 25:00 minutes long.

I had another disc burning (Band of Brothers) and it worked fine - just finished. I'll try the Monty Python again and report back.

Appreciate the guidance...

OK, tried it again, MTR 2.6.6 in Full Disc Extraction mode.

Opening HB (using 9.3 this time), the only source I get is the 1 minute 51 second segment with 4 chapters. When I recheck the source and look at the video TS folder, there are 4 VOB's the approximate size of an single episode.

Is it time to ditch MTR and use DVD2one? Just what am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Assuming you have VLC installed, you may have more luck encoding straight from disc using HB - especially if you enable libdvdnav support that's available in the recent snapshots. Please note that you'll need to restart HB for the change to take effect.

MTR 2.6.6 is woefully outdated now - DVD2OneX (with Fairmount), Mac DVDRipper Pro or Ripit.app may be better options.

Yes, I've been using VLC since I downloaded HB 9.3

I DO need to combine some 2 disc movies (LOTR/Godfather 2) so I was leaning towards DVD2one, and I already have Fairmount.

I'll try using just HB.......

Thanks for the continued advice!

I think that Monty Python disk is just impossible to rip properly from the R1 release. There's an older thread about it someplace, and I spent a long time screwing with it before giving up on ripping the episodes from the R1 release.

I have this same problem with a seminar DVD I'm trying to rip. It's showing as being just over a minute long when it should actually be 55 mins long. HB is properly showing the number of chapters in the title, it just seems like the time cuts off after the first chapter.

Any ideas?

An update here......

I gave up on Disc 3 of Monty Python's Flying Circus I just couldn't get it to work any way I tried, I'm going to have to pony up for Detox.

Also, another stupid question..... where is the "libdivnav" in the advanced settings of the new snapshot? Couldn't find it anywhere - is it something I have to install, and if so, where do I install it - do I use the same process as VLC?

I did however start converting Disc 4 of Monty Python - it works just fine, no problems, just like Discs 1 & 2. I expect I will find additional problem discs as I work my way through the set.

Thanks!

The dvdnav option is in advanced *Preferences*. Myself and others have successfully encoded disc 3 of monty python using dvdnav. If you are using the mac ui, you will have to exit and restart handbrake after enabling dvdnav in order for it to take effect.

Update - Problem Solved!

Thanks to everyone's help, opening "libdvdnav" enabled me to encode Disc 3 of Monty Python's Flying Circus!

I appreciate all the guidance and help I got here. I'm still going to need DVD2ONE for "flippers" and dual Disc sets like LOTR, but this will get me through the rest of my collection.

New snapshot is working really well - no problems so far, picture quality is good, really looking forward to 9.4

Handbrake rocks!
