Converting HD MKV

Post by jpingen »

Hi,

I am new to this forum, and new to handbrake. I have been using handbrake for the pas 2 weeks to rip dvd's. And it works great.

I also run windows to convert HD MKV files to HD VOB files wth ac3 sound.
Since this is the only thing i use windows for, i would like to convert those files on my mac. But i have a hard time finding a good application to do that.

If i convert a HD MKV with these settings:

Format: avi files

video:
video codes H.264 (x264)
Framerate: Same as source
2-pass encoding checked
turbo first pass checked
average bitrate: 1800

Audio & subtitles:
Audio Codec: ac3 passthru

Will the picture be in HD quality?

The source file is 1280 x 720
the output file is 1280x720 too, according to handbrake. But when i watch the converted file, i'm not completely sure the picture is HD quality.

Not quite sure what you're asking... anything 720p or greater is technically HD. There is no specific bitrate requirement to make something HD.

That said I would NEVER use ABR to convert a HD source via Handbrake. CQ will give you a much better result (especially if you are using ABR=1800 as mentioned in your post). There are a bunch of threads on this forum talking about converting HD sources with Handbrake.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my message.
I just found a really good and fast way to convert mkv files with tsmuxer. This program was exactly what i needed.

That bit rate is way too low for HD. I use 1500 for regular DVDs and sometimes it's not good. For HD, you would want something closer to 8000.

I think he's looking to HandBrake to finally support output to VOB.
