Encoding an iTunes purchase?

First off, I love this software (HandBrake) and appreciate the work that's gone into developing it, so thanks.

Second, I was kind of surprised there weren't any other similar posts on this topic, or maybe I'm just missing what's obvious.

Third, the actual question. Can a movie purchased on iTunes be encoded with HandBrake? I've tried three times now and each time HB crashes shortly after I click "start". I'm guessing the simple answer is no, that's what Apple TV is for. I thought I'd just put it out there.

I figured the activity log would be pretty much useless in this circumstance but thought I'd include it for S&G's.

I doubt HB can do this directly as the iTunes video files are encrypted.

It's the same reason you can't play these files without being authenticated through iTunes using your iTunes account information. To get HB to encode these files would likely be very hard to program (seeing as you'd have to crack the DRM) and illegal.

Depends on where you're at... in the U.S. this would violate the DMCA.

Another angle... why would you take a lossy compressed MP4 file that is compatible with all Apple equipment and re-encode it to another lossy compressed MP4 file?

Just as an aside on what Nightstorm said, The Fair Use Clause in the copyright law DOES allow you to make a single back-up copy of any media you own. The DMCA, however, forbids this if it involves breaking any existing copy protection. I'll let you decide which one takes precedence. (Hint: it's not the one we all would like it to be).
