"Universal" setting crashes Quicktime

Post by adamschoales »

Hey everyone, so here's a weird problem I've had as of late.

I just recently updated to the latest version and did some poking around and found out that people highly recommended the universal setting for apple devices so it would play on everything. Great. However I noticed one small problem - all the files converted using it refused to open in quicktime. The program would launch and immediately quit. Playing the file in VLC SORT OF worked, but anytime I would seek the video would break apart (kind of how .mkv videos do).

So I tried the Quicktime setting and it seems to work okay, as do the rest. Problem is I want to make sure everything works universally which is why I want to use the "universal" setting.

Here's the log from my latest encode, in which I did both Universal and QT presets

Code: Select all

Re: "Universal" setting crashes Quicktime

Post by TedJ »

You may want to disable the second audio track for the Universal preset, which is normally used for the AC3 passthrough track. In this case, your source audio is LPCM uncompressed, and the concurrent AAC tracks may be causing the issue.

I'm curious if you're running QuickTime 7.6? If so, any file containing more than one unknown language audio track will cause QTPlayer 7.6 to crash. Pretty widely known bug. I use Subler (check the TikiBar) to change the language to English for the tracks.

yea, subler seems to fix most of those files for me too, though I didn't know it was due to the audio files being labeled as unknown. I have usually just chosen optimize; though when I think about it, I am a neat freak, and I might have subconsciously changed the audio files to english...
