FFmpeg 0.9.1

Post by alexneblett01 »

I noticed that HandBrake currently uses FFmpeg .7. Is there any reason not to move forward to .9.1?

Thanks,

Alex

Is there a compelling reason to upgrade?

HandBrake 0.9.5 uses FFmpeg svn25689.

The HandBrake nightlies use Libav git-cae4f4b, which dates back to November 3, 2011.
That's a pre-0.8 version of Libav (which would correspond to a pre-0.9 version of FFmpeg).

Code: Select all

FFmpeg branch Libav branch
------------- ------------

0.5 branch 0.5 branch

0.6 branch 0.6 branch

0.7 branch --
|-> (same as Libav 0.7 branch, but with 0.6-compatible ABI)

0.8 branch 0.7 branch

0.9 branch 0.8 branch

I found that when I took the latest git and used the new ffmpeg that my encoding rate went up. I also found that a lot of the patches were no longer needed which might be nice moving forward. So far, I have found no issues introduced by the upgrade.

So faster encodes + less patches = better.

Thanks,

Alex
