It has something to do with the letters like y,p,q,j ect that hang down. Makes it difficult to enjoy the anime.
You've given us almost no information. Show us an activity log of an encode with this problem.

Could you elaborate? I didn't see anything special in the screencap you showed, except perhaps some unusual shadowing on those letters.

I think that is the problem. I've experienced it too: the shadows on letters with descenders are mis-positioned.

Exactly what jamiemlaw is saying, the shadow and the fill are miss aligned, the fill is dropping down a bit. I believe this is happening will all conversions but the slimmer text/shadows are harder to see.
Image
look at the G closely, you will see at the top of it there is a hole showing.

Sorry JohnAStebbins, don't really know how to do that. I only joined this forum for this feature. Thought the solution would be obvious just seeing this image. Not really a coder so what do I know.

@JohnAStebbins, I've done an encode with the latest nightly on a video that used to display the mis-aligned shadow symptom, and it is now fine.

@Drifter, if you read the forum rules (listed as an announcement at the top of every sub-forum -- you have read the rules, right? ;-) ) they tell you how to post an activity log. Are you using the latest nightly build?

I used Windows GUI svn3626 and still am getting this issue. But not on all my files.

davidfstr: Thanks for the deadlock patch. Unfortunately I don't have my Mac setup to compile, so I can't test unless it gets added to the nightly builds. *cough* *cough* :)

Ran into a small problem with a new show. The Batch torrent is at http://www.nyaatorrents.org/?page=torre ... tid=121745. You can get just episode 2 to test. There is one subtitle and the OP has three sections. English, Romanji, and Kanji/Kana. The Kanji/Kana is just showing squares. I am assuming maybe since it is English you aren't doing Unicode character set? The original looks fine in VLC.

As I recall, the input is assumed to be in UTF-8, which should handle anything under the sun. Will have to check though.

Probably won't see much activity from me until Nov 8 or so, since it's becoming serious crunch time at work.

Finally back.

John, did you ever get to look at the deadlock situation I described?

Outstanding bug list:
* Bad kanji display - Need to repro. Have sample file.
* Fontconfig warnings - Need to repro. Probably need to spin up a fresh machine to try this.
* Strange shadows on letters that hang down - Insufficient information. Suspect rendering code in libfreetype.

Apparently SSA burn-in still doesn't work at all under Windows. With a release scheduled for Nov. 23, this should probably be the first SSA-related priority.

s55 and j45 are currently investigating it, although they could probably use some help.

See this post + the following 4 or so (including a proposed fix). I have two sample files that this will repro on, which I will send you links to.

That is serious. I didn't know there was a complete SSA failure under Windows. I'll prioritize that then.

I can verify that SSA burn-in works for svn3667-Win_GUI in Windows 7 (x64), if not perfectly.

I observed that the GUI option to offset the start time didn't seem to impact the subtitles, causing them to be be delayed by the offset. (Selecting seconds 30-60 would cause subtitles from seconds 0-30 to be rendered.)

Also, dangling glyphs [jpqy] seem to go below the bottom of the screen slightly. (small quibble)

Bazald, can you please post a log of where it is working. I always get a fontconfig missing config file error when using burnin.

Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file

Passthru seems to work fine though.

Wonder if it's detecting another fonts.conf file somewhere else on your system.

I get the same error (warning?), but it doesn't seem to impact the final result.

Ditto. Since this isn't actually causing a failure on Windows, I am deescalating it again.

On another note, I've extracted the parts of this thread about the older SSA stall issue (including my proposed fix) to a separate thread, since it's becoming too complicated to read here: http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php ... 06&start=0

Based on the logs, I'd say it works under Windows when the source contains an "embedded" font file (like KabutoTX's sample), but fails when the file doesn't have any font.

Makes sense. I'll investigate in this direction.

@davidstr

ill try again to request that you add ASS/SSA soft subtitle pass-through on mkv container but using mkvmerge for it (but if handbrake doesnt use mkvmerge then you can discard this post of mine) i found out that you can just re-mux the chapters, attachments and subs on the source video to the output video like this

Code: Select all

mkvmerge -o TheNewOutputVideoReMux.mkv -S -M TheOutputVideoFromHandbrake.mkv -A -D TheInputVideoWithSubs.mkv
where:
-o output file
-S no subs
-M no attachments
-A no audio
-D no video

thanks for reading :)

HandBrake does not use mkvmerge.

This feature works great for the most part on OS X, just when there are subtitles displayed at the top to the right they letters overlap and it can't be read.

Here is a screen shot and log
