New x264 mbtree comparisons

Okay, so with x264's new mbtree stuff, we need to get a handle on how it affects the crf curve for our presets http://git.videolan.org/gitweb.cgi?p=x2 ... 1a2f015fe3.

Currently we are keeping a tarball of the latest git head of x264 on our contribs directory for hb. we are currently at x264-r1206-9a54c48.tar.gz
which is head as of this post. Now it is *not* in the current hb trunk since the variance in the crf curve may be substantial indeed. So we have chosen to keep updated tarballs on rocky and use patched versions to test the variance. Basically apply the patch as per the rev and test same source current hb head and patched x264 head. For testing it makes sense that all tests use the current Apple > Universal preset since that is both popular and has the broadest appeal and has the widest variety of target playback platforms.

So, what we are looking for is test encodes done on the same source with the two revs, hb trunk and patched with the latest x264 both using the Apple > Universal preset. So please post you'reactivity log in codeblocks taking care to note the source as in this example:

Which will help us determine across a variety of sources how current hb x264 compares against the mbtree enabled x264 at a given rf value thereby if necessary tuning our built in presets.

We might note the bitrate at the end and the SSIM Mean as benchmarks in comparison.

I started this run before dynaflash posted the thread, so I didn't use the universal preset. I'll do more using the preset later.
Here are the x264 settings used: ref=4:bframes=4:subme=8:b-adapt=2:psy-rd=0.8,0.2:deblock=-1,-1

Summary:
Note: I've left "A Bridge Too Far" out of the summary as it's HD, while the rest is SD. And it's large SSIM difference between mbtree and no-mbtree would skew the results. Should look at a batch of HD sources separately.

What's notable about this summary is that the bell curve for PSNR and SSIM is narrower for mbtree than for pre-mbtree, even though there are very large changes for individual sources. And overall, current RF values get you very close to the same average PSNR and SSIM for pre-mbtree vs mbtree.

Why are people summarizing with Global PSNR instead of Average PSNR? Unless you're doing a short clip, isn't Average supposed to be more accurate? And both are less useful than SSIM imo...

Anyway, I think I'm going to leave the builtins at RF 20 for now...

Not sure if you want more examples, but here is an HDTV (clear QAM) capture. Both done with SVN 2764. Only changes from default Universal preset were to turn on decomb (default) and force fps to 29.97 (source was 59.94). I can post full logs for both encodes if you want them. :) Amazing, MBtree is a full 100MB smaller in size on a 42 min show, but the picture looks the same (subjectively, of course).
