[Upstream] DNxHR-Support

DNxHR-Support

4K-Video is the new Full-HD. Avid Media Composer switched on his new codec DNxHR. Please give Handbrake an update.

Your link contains none of the necessary information to implement support for this new codec. Can you provide full specifications for this new codec?

Here is it:

The DNxHD is the "old" Codec. It's supports a resolution up to 2K. Since Media Composer 8.3, Avid released the new DNxHR Codec - it can handle files resolution independence.

Dnxhr is a proprietary, licensed postproduction solution. There is no implementation beyond MC yet, that I know of. I would look to Adobe Premiere, also a paid, licensed solution, to be an early adopter.

There will not be an open source alternative decoder for a very long time, I predict.

This has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the free Avid LE distributions you linked.
Until Handbrake is actually producing UHD output, there is no compelling sense in this.
Wishful thinking aside, its better to have one's facts in order prior to requesting feature support.

Just FWIW, here's the kind of document we need to add support for a new codec: https://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-H.264-201402-I/en

Hint: if it's not at least 100 pages or more, it's usually not a specification.

Regardless, support would be required in the upstream libav project, not HandBrake.

So, when upstream supports it, it get included in the version of HandBrake after whatever their release is. Chances are unless someone takes an interest and has a useful spec, or is good at reverse engineering, it'll be a long time before this is included in HandBrake.

Either way, marking as "Upstream" since this request is not for HandBrake but LibAV.

I hate to resurrect an olde thread, but DNxHR is quickly becoming if not already the de facto standard in production for finishing UHD/4k films. It's what people use when exporting from Avid, from Premiere - and since Prores is officially dead on Windows - this trend will only continue, DNxHR is the master format for finishing UHD in production.

If you put in your request to the libav team, and it is accepted, eventually it will find its way into Handbrake.
