Videoes will not play on PS3 and more

Post by funkytwig »

Ever since I upgraded my PS3 firmware to 2.60 the mp4 files I created with handbrake do not show up :(

Any advice?

PS supplying a activity log does not seem apropreate.

Sorry, can't give you any advice on this one... none of the devs here actually own a PS3. You're probably going to have more luck asking on a PS3 specific forum.

Moving to Tiki Bar, since this doesn't really have anything to do with HB.

Um, what?

How is it not appropriate to give people a clue what settings you were using in the videos you say do not work?

I read the original post as saying that HB encodes that worked prior to the firmware update were now broken.

Well, devs would still need to know what settings he was using to have any idea where to start figuring out which settings may have been broken by the PS3 firmware update.

That's a valid point, although as I mentioned in my first post none of the devs own a PS3. I don't see why the onus should be on them to attempt to track Sony's firmware updates.

I've made this comment on several occasions now... if you have a PS3 and some brain cells to bump together, then feel free to develop and test a PS3 preset. I'm sure the devs would love the assistance.

I just upgraded my PS3 to firmware 2.60, and can confirm that mine now also won't play a video encoded using the Handbrake PS3 preset. (This PS3 firmware upgrade also seems to disable many of my other videos.)

Sorry, I'm not the person to recommend an alternate encoding set, but thought it would at least help to confirm the original report.

Why are PS3 users chronically incapable of providing logs?

Every time you guys have a problem it's the same, tedious ordeal to extract viable information from you.

When you complain but refuse to provide the actionable detail you know we need, you are *not* contributing in any meaningful way. This is the attitude that will see video gaming presets permanently removed from the next release. You just make yourselves way too much trouble to support.

I hope you're all happy.

hey, no unfair grouping of ps3 types ... particularly those of us that love and rely on your app and appreciate all the assistance you have provided us in this forum.

to the ps3-ers above, et al; i have updated to 2.6 and all my encodes play. in 5.1. if you care to search the forum, you will find my settings listed.
if not, don't complain --go find another app and another forum to whinge on.

Wow, clearly I've stepped into some long running sore spot, but to the extent jbrjake's comment was directed at me I feel unfairly treated.

As a first time handbrake user, browsing these forums for the first time, I see a post from someone who noticed something I had just seen myself. I simply post a note confirming I saw it too. The issue relates to a change in PS3 playback behavior following a PS3 firmware change. It applies to encodings that were created by solutions other than Handbrake as well as Handbrake. In all, that smells to me like a PS3 issue, not a handbrake issue. It's not a complaint against anyone or any product. I'm new to both handbrake and PS3 playback, so not yet ready to wade in with a serious opinion or suggest a course of action. I neither request nor expect any personalized support. I just think I'm participating in the early stages of a discussion of an issue that will probably take shape on its own as more users compare and contrast their similar and differing experiences. Or get quickly obsoleted by a PS3 patch.

Then I get my head taken off and someone wants to pull PS3 support from all future versions. Ironically, the PS3 is barely even a sideshow in my ongoing media setup, so that community is getting screwed by a newbie who doesn't even really represent them at all.

Pretty harsh.

This has nothing to do with HandBrake encoded videos, it is to do with the firmware update, just hold out for the next one and maybe Sony will fix it.

My mat has the same issue, the videos still play on mine as I haven't upgraded :D

@Northy: exactly

@jbrjake: would a more polite "I understand you and the OP both indicated that this was likely a PS3 vs HB issue, but if anyone would care to post an activity log I would still like to review one" kill you? Other more polite alternatives could include "OK, thanks for the report, there's nothing for the HandBrake team to do here but we'll keep this thread open for any other PS3 users who'd like to contribute" or just waiting until there's an issue that's ripe for you to participate in before responding.

Because I continue to admire the software and the gift of making it available to the public despite the rudeness on these forums, I am providing the following log and details at your request.

To reproduce:
1. Insert West Wing Season 1 DVD, Disc 1, Side A
2. Launch windows version of HB 0.9.3
3. Select PS3 preset
4. Provide output file name
5. Press Start

Compatibility of resulting file:
A. local playback on Windows Vista with CCCP and iTunes/QuickTime installed: works fine
B. streamed from vista to Boxee on MacOS on Intel MacBook Pro over 100mbit wired ethernet: continuous stuttering, but video and audio look correct between stutters
C. streamed to PS3: neither this nor any of my other .mp4 titles appear in the PS3 remote media browser; .avi titles encoded via XviD continue to be listed and continue to play back OK

It doesn't work.
Ultimately, developers are generally sharp spoken people and to the point. We don't do fluff. He's not been rude in this thread.

Looking at your log, your on windows. try setting crop to no crop. The preset should do this but doesn't in the windows GUI due to a bug. On the off chance this is the issue, try a quick 1 chapter encode to check.
Chances are, your stuffed if previously working videos no longer play. It'll be up to Sony to undo whatever they broke.

Get a clue.

When people refuse to provide logs, we cannot try to identify problems.

Perhaps more troubling, when people refuse to provide logs, other users cannot tell if they are encountering the same problem.

This, in fact, is far worse than not posting at all. Vague unsubstantiated issues attract other users with vague, unsubstantiated issues, muddying up threads to the point they help no one. This is demonstrated in a number of PS3 threads, where uses confuse cause and effect. Videos won't play for any number of reasons. Do you think it would help anyone if other people posted in this thread because they too discover "Videos will not play on PS3" and only many posts later it was discovered that they were, say, trying to use the wrong container or codec?

It's laughable for you to call me out for being impolite when I'm only trying to get you all to follow the rules you agreed to when you registered on this forum. Rules we put in place just to avoid tedious conversations like this. Would it kill you to follow the rules without repeated prompting from developers?

Thank you for finally posting a log. I hope other users encountering issues follow suit. I concur with Scott -- try using loose anamorphic or crop 0 on all sides.

@Northy: See, if everyone actually posted logs, it would be possible to discern if there are similarities between all the videos that wouldn't play. It is quite unlikely Sony broke mp4 playback entirely. It is quite likely that one particular parameter of the encoded videos is to blame. This can only be identified through a number of logs of different settings and careful, thorough testing. While it might be reverted in a future firmware update, there is no guarantee of that. On the other hand, there's a definite possibility that someone who tested rigorously could find h.264+mp4 settings that worked.

OK, I tried changing crop to custom:0/0/0/0. Same PS3 results as before. Log below. I appreciate the drive from all concerned to dig into this issue and regret if I somehow did muddy the waters.

I will try the loose anamorphic case, and the other settings an earlier poster said were working for him, when I can later today to round out this report. Meanwhile I personally am OK with the current issue as I am a very infrequent PS3 user, who tried this initially mainly out of curiosity. I've gotten much more than I bargained far out of my original post.

Re: Videoes will not play on PS3 and more

Post by brucek2 »

If I found the right melbdean post, same results using his recommended settings as well. This is what I tried to replicate:
Start with the ps3 preset then change -->
* Average Bitrate to Constant Quality 59%
* Strict Anamorphic to Loose Anamorphic
* Mixdown set to 6-Channel Discrete
Saved the preset as 'PS3 & ATV 5.1', checking Source Maximum (post source scan) on the Picture Settings option
I did not see an option for "source maximum (post source scan)" in my UI though. Hope that didn't blow the experiment.
I did not see an option for "source maximum (post source scan)" in my UI though. Hope that didn't blow the experiment.
hi, 'source maximum' is in the preset dialog box i.e. when you save a custom preset, you will find it in that dialog box.
it may be different in your case as i am using mac ui and have never seen the windows version.
it also may be that that particular trick doesn't make the slightest difference: the dev's will know for sure no doubt.

i feel your pain not getting the result you want. not to make it worse or anything, i tried for nearly a year to get a finished file that would play 5.1 sound on both ps3 and atv. HB is only the finishing touch -i have to rip my DVD's with MtR or RipIt, then save them to a single VOB under 4GB using DVD2OneX, coz ripping them to a single VOB with MtR doesn't work, before they are ready for HB.

but now, i'm in nirvana coz everything works beautifully ... until the next update.

good luck,

Some more things to try:

* Turn off anamorphic
* Specify a particular constant framerate
* Try not setting a level (x264 autolevels these days and maybe the PS3 is now freaking out when the level is higher than necessary)
* Lower the audio bitrate to 128 (you never know...)

Sorry, I don't have any specific logs to provide, however I did notice something interesting last night (before I read this thread).

Configuration:
Windows Vista 64
Apple TV profile with anamorphic set to "None", quality between 50-57

When using PS3 Media Server to stream files created with HB I have the same problems as described on this thread. However, what I found interesting is that if I select a remuxed version of the file the video works just fine (audio doesn't work in either case). The PS3 is still reporting AVC video codec, so I'm pretty confident that PS3 Media Server is not re-encoding the video (just repackaging it).

So, perhaps this has nothing to do with the video encode, and is instead related to the Mp4 file structure...

After doing quite a bit of trial and error I'm pretty confident that this is a MP4/M4V file container incompatibility between HandBrake and the PS3. I've tried various combinations of video and audio, MP4 large file on/off, etc. None of them will play on the PS3. However, if you use PS3 Media Player and remux the same video stream things work great.

Not necessarily. I just encoded a 30-second clip with HandBrake 0.9.3, and it played fine on a PS3 (2.60), from a USB key:
