Suggestions for x265 settings

Post by Smithcraft »

Hello!

So now that it's getting a bit chilly I figured I'd heat things up with encoding a bit.

I grabbed the nightly a few days ago and started with some grainy movies. The first is the Criterion Le Samourai, which after ~20 hours (1.9 fps), looks great! But it's a bit bigger than I was hoping for. I know grainy movies are going to be bigger, or even bigger than the source, but I was hoping for the x265 cure all to file size.

I set it to a CRF of 22 and used the Grain tune, and the Main10 profile. I'm wondering if I maybe was too conservative with the CRF, or if I should have used one of the other profiles? The workstation is beyond laggy with the encodes going so it's a bit of pain to grab the log right now. But I'm pretty sure that's what I set it for.

So, suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks!

For archival encodes, x265 doesn’t typically excel over x264 unless the source is higher resolution than 1080p.

You've been woefully mislead.

Upgrade to an OS with a working scheduler.

Having all the files working under one file system seems to make things easier. So Windows 7 Pro 64bit remains as the workstations OS. Thanks though.
