Will HandBrake utilize Intel's Visual Compute Accelerator VCA1283LVV for x265 encoding

Post by josh52180 »

I am thinking about purchasing a Intel Visual Compute Accelerator VCA1283LVV but I want to make sure that HandBrake will be able to utilize it as I have been using handbrake for years and it is what I am most comfortable using.

I have been encoding my entire library to x265 very very slowly so I'm looking for something that can speed up the process.

I can't seem to find any information about this card being used with HandBrake.

If this will not work with HandBrake what would my other options be to speed up x265 encoding.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The latest Intel cpu/gpu support h.265 encoding but I'm not sure if HB supports that, but I imagine that will be your best bet in the future.

HandBrake supports QuickSync H.265 and 4.

x265 and x264 have no useful hardware acceleration. They are both H.264/5 encoders. (Don't mix up x264 vs H.264. One is an encoder, one is a format.)

That looks like just a normal XEON CPU. It doesn't mention QuickSync on the datasheet so we can't tell you if it'll work or not

But it is useless with Handbrake, there are too many issues with Handbrake using H265. One big issue is the broken decoding, CPU load close to 100% while using a hardware decoder is useless. H265 with Quicksync on Handbrake never was a usable option. I was about to ask about the plans to add Main10 as Kabylake support it but it won't be required until H265 is working properly.

H264 decoding is fully broken as well, at least on Kabylake.

edit: QSV decoding is fully broken in the latest nightly, working in the latest final for h264. But there is no h265 support in the latest final.

You mean on playback? We are not aware of any issues right now regarding this. Have you raised an issue?

Or during encode? It's perfectly normal for HandBrake to use the CPU heavily during a QuickSync encode. For example, many of the filters simply don't exist in the QuickSync pipeline, so you have to leave, filter, re-enter in order to use the feature. As such, certain features have to be on the CPU. So, Certain Filters, A/V Sync, Framerate, Audio, Subtitles are all done on the CPU. Youn can get low CPU usage, but you won't unless you change our default settings to not use features that are on the CPU.
I was about to ask about the plans to add Main10 as Kabylake support it but it won't be required until H265 is working properly.
Again, what's wrong with it? raise a bug, provide logs / screenshots of the problems your seeing or it's not going to get fixed.
H264 decoding is fully broken as well, at least on Kabylake.
I think you get the drift by now.

Here is a scan of a QSV H264 encode process. Hardware decoding doesn't seem to work in last nightly which results in a 80% CPU load and encoding speed is very slow. Same for h265. Latest official works fine, although there is no h265.

During encode. It isn't normal, it is abnormal.
Sorry, but this simply isn't true. As I already explained, HandBrake is doing more than just decode and encode. The other processes don't run on QuickSync.
[19:20:35] h264_qsv-decoder done: 11708 frames, 0 decoder errors
Looks like the decoder is working fine.

High CPU is to be expected with the settings you chose. You've got Decomb with heavy Deinterlacing running on the CPU. So that will bottleneck the process and use up a fair chunk of the CPU. Audio Decoder will also likely nearly max out a single core as well, so right here along we could easily be talking 75%+ usage on a quad core CPU

I think the only thing we've not re-implemented since moving to the libav qsv wrapper, is the QSV deinterlacer. (It doesn't support decomb, but it would possibally reduce CPU usage a bit if when that's re-added.)

EDIT: I think there is also a lack of hardware memory support in libav too but that's also getting sorted.
[19:20:35] decomb: deinterlaced 11708 | blended 0 | unfiltered 0 | total 11708
Also, I'm curious, do you work for Intel. I wasn't aware the 7700K was pubically available yet?

There is something broken. Look at the difference.

Latest nightly
CPU Load= 80-85%
Speed= 109 fps

Latest official
CPU Load= 3%
Speed= 250 fps

Same settings and video sample. Latest official works as expected. This is a video sample I'm using for several years, I know exactly how it should behave with Quicksync.

Some shops were selling Desktop Kabylake this week in Germany.

Your settings don't match. You have decomb and yadiff running in the nightly build that's not running in the 0.10.5 logs.

On my 4770K 1080p -> 1080p h.264 file. Video Only, No Filters.
1. 200fps with 37% CPU Usage.
2. 240fps with 88% CPU Usage (Software Decoder)
3. 55fps with x264 Fast preset (Software Decoder)

For 1. The lack of zero-copy right now will be causeing the overhead that's slowing thigns down abit and keeping the CPU around 30~40%.
When the libav warpper has working zero-copy things should improve again, but for now it's working as intended.

So, if you want best performance, you need to use a nightly before yesterdays dropped. Regardless, it'll still work fine for most.

This is Handbrake out of the box. The only things I changed are the codec, preset and bitrate.

gmb, HandBrakes defaults have changed significantly between 0.10.5 and now. Features that were off by default (such as decomb) are now on by default.

The difference is that in the latest nightly, you have hardware decoding and hardware encoding, but no hardware-accelerated filtering (scale, deinterlace etc.). This is pretty annoying, but we will re-introduce the feature eventually.

Latest nightly
CPU Load= 80-85%
Speed= 109 fps

Latest official
CPU Load= 3%
Speed= 250 fps
You're using comically different settings.

Not knowingly, it' the libhb defaults which were temporarily modified as we migrate from one QSV backend to another.

Unfortunately Handbrake is still bugged when using advanced options with h265 QS, it just freezes.

gop-pic-size=0 results in GopPicSize 65535

gop-pic-size=256 results in a freeze as well. Just broken this setting, which is a big issues because Handbrake defaults to 24 for the gop which is unfavorable for the quality.

vbv-maxrate doesn't work either, ref-dist higher than 3 as well. So basically all advanced settings are broken/not working for QSV H265. Nothing new actually, it never worked. Which makes H265 QSV only useful for noobs that won't touch any settings except for bitrate and encoder preset.

Yes, about this: Decomb. I used it for some old movies by converting to x265, but the result is worse. :(
Better not use this feature.

Decomb seems only to be an extra bitrate-filter...

Use it on encodes that need it, don't use it on encodes that don't.
