Hello to everyone...
First post here and I'm very glad to have found this community !
My first question on this forum is related to the encoding speed. I own many Macs as I have a tendency to push each machine to its limits by upgrading its components / software and, eventually, each one ends up having a particular task.
Which brings me to my encoding setup.
Right now, I'm using a black MacBook 2.4 Ghz w/ 4Gig of Ram, external hard drives for sources, internal hard drive as a recipient to the final encoding and it's quite fast (I can encode a two hour movie w/ high profile settings in less than 8 hours, sometimes 6 hours if 90 minutes long).
Also, I have a 2003 MDD G4 (2x1.25Ghz) w/ 2 Gig of Ram but the encoding is very slow on this one (I'm wondering if the PPC version of Handbrake addresses the fact that the G4 has two processors). Obviously, this is very old tech so I'm not expecting miracles but at least more than an average of 2 frames / second and I'd like to hear from those of you who have older (pre-G5) encoding setups.
Thank you,
Andrew.
What is your encoding setup (Mac hardware wise) ?

Moved to TIKI bar.

the intel macbook will smoke the ppc G4 every time, this is normal.

Dynaflash,
Should I expect an octo core Mac Pro (2x 2.26 Ghz w/ 6 Gigs of RAM) to be four times as fast as the Macbook when it comes to encoding ?
I'm wondering if Handbrake will use all the cores.
Thank you,
Andrew.

It can use all the cores, however it does depend on the settings used.
Those Nehalem Octo cores are fast. Your talking >100fps easily
