Would this be an ok machine to encode x265 1080p?

Post by s0974748 »

Hey everyone!

I have the opportunity to buy an HP EliteDesk 800 G5 with an 8 core i7-9700, 16 GB Ram with integrated Intel UHD graphics 630 for about half of what it usually costs.

I've started encoding some of my old DVDs and Bluerays to x265 10bit since I'm running out of space on my HDDs. My current system is a 4 core i5-8265U, 8 GB Ram and Intel UHD graphics 620 encoding anything takes a lot of time.

How much could I profit when buying the HP EliteDesk compared to my current setup? From what I read the processor and the cores are what's most important when encoding, right? A graphics card would be nice, but I'm not doing hardware transcoding and haven't read a lot about hardware encoding either except it's supposed to be not as good as the the usual option.

All this machine would be running, would be Plex and Handbrake (and MakeMKV).

What do you think?

Don't expect any great shakes from the Intel graphics, otherwise it looks decent.

8c/8t is pretty good for 1080p x265 assuming reasonable settings. Somewhere in the vicinity of realtime for 24fps content.

You won't profit anything with it. But easily 2-3x faster than your laptop.

What's your expectation?

You may also consider an AMD system as the bang for buck there is pretty insane right now. Even taking into account your "deal", you might be surprised with the performance per dollar there.

If your lucky, you might be looking at double the performance but it's really difficult to say.
