3 seconds of silence at beginning of DVD -- video delay

I am trying to rip and encode an Alice In Wonderland (1999) DVD,
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0164993/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_in_W ... 1999_film)
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=K3SGReZDJTU (opening "flash screen" skipped in this version...)
but the audio precedes the video by three seconds throughout my encode. If I rip an individual chapter other than chapter one, it is fine. Chapter one is the problem. It begins with three seconds of silence and something of a "flash screen" advertisement. If I start the encode from chapter one, that three seconds of silence on the DVD disappears in the final encode, and the audio is three seconds ahead from there onwards.

So, how do I delay the audio by three seconds or cut the first three seconds of video? Or is there another workaround?

Nothing jumps out at me in the log. Note, I also suggested you give the snapshot a try. Many sync issues have been fixed since the 0.9.2 release.

The sync is fine after the first section, if I start from a later section. The first 3 seconds of the first section are a silent splash screen. This is the source of the problem.

But away from the details of why, and to the question of how . . .

Is there no way to offset the audio in Handbrake? No way to delay the audio by 3 seconds the whole way through? If not, and I know this is only a Handbrake forum, so excuse me for asking here, but would other applications be capable of shifting the audio after Handbrake has produced the mp4?

I hesitate to install and try the snapshot because it is accompanied with this warning:
Be warned. This code is not ready for civilian use...
If you do not fear living on the bleeding edge, and do not demand stability from your software, download a development snapshot of HandBrake now.
I checked the list of fixes as well, and nothing seemed related to my issue.

Now, "Why?" is rather obvious, isn't it?

If you are trying to say that you do not know how to delay audio under Handbrake, and that trying a new build *might* fix the problem, then it would be easier just to say that. I've asked twice now if such is possible, and I still haven't gotten a direct answer.

The third sentence states that many sync issues were fixed since .9.2. Why don't you believe him?

My personal experience, any sync issues I had ~.9.2 were fixed in later revisions.

No. It's not obvious in the least, because what you're saying simply is not true.

The third item on the list of fixes is:
- Better AV sync through full compliance with the MPEG Standard Target Decoder timing model

OK. That did it. I downloaded and installed the new version (a deb package for ubuntu). There was no guidance about uninstalling first, so I made sure I had a fresh image of my OS partition, and just double-clicked the deb file. It installed fine.

When I ran the Alice video through the new Handbrake, the audio was synchronized fine. There were no problems.

Thank you for the messages here -- even more thanks go to the developers for writing and improving Handbrake.
