AMD VCE

Post by NeutronJK »

Description of problem or question:
I have Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with Radeon Software for Linux® 20.20 and Handbrake 1.3.3 installed. When I go the the Video tab Video Encoder field, I don't see an option to use the AMD video card (an RX570 GPU) as the transcoding engine. Is this card not supported for transcoding on Handbrake?

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.3.3

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

HandBrake Activity Log ***required*** (see How-to get an activity log)

Where did you get HB from?

I don't remember, but probably from the Ubuntu repos.

That doesn't seem to make a difference. Just to explain what I am doing -- I am running the graphical version of Handbrake on Ubuntu 20.04. And I am verifying that it isn't using VCE by going to the Video Encoder drop-down field (under the Video tab) and I only see:
H.264 (x264)
H.264 10 bit (x264)
H.265 (x254)
H.265 10 bit (x265)
H.265 12 bit (x265)
MPEG-4
MPEG-2
and the following options grayed out:
VP-8
VP-9
Theora

I would have expected that I would get options with (VCE) in the name to indicate the use of the RX570 GPU.
I did check "Preferences" to see if there was something that needed to be enabled, but found nothing.

If you're using the Ubuntu build, you need to contact Ubuntu for support. They make certain packaging decisions for political or ideological reasons that break or eliminate several features in HB.

Will do. I have tried using the Stebbins repo, the Ubuntu repo (and they have two versions) and the Flatpak version.

I will keep digging, but thanks to both of you for trying to help.
