Beginner*s problems / maybe setup problem

Post by Ikarus »

Preliminaries:
My goal is to convert a number of video DVDs (privately recorded from good old analog TV - no DRM issues here) to video files that my in laws can watch on their tablet computers. Quality concerns are - for the moment - secondary. For convenience, I copied the VIDEO_TS folder on my hard disk and use this as the source (but the problem remains the same when I try to read from the DVD drive)

Description of problem or question:
When I open a video folder in HB and choose any presets, the video format is recognized and the first pass through the data proceeds normally. After that, HB just states 'Encode failed' and stops. As HB works perfectly fine in a Win7 virtual machine on the same source files, I assume that it is some stupid setup problem in my Linux - but I cannot track it down. There are so many error messages in the log that they do not really help; I just do nopt know which is the relevant one ... Any ideas?

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
Perfectly reproducible with any sources/settings/presets I tried :-(

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.3.3

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
openSUSE 15.2 Leap

Did you install from here:

https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

If not, try the flatpak.

Recorded DVDs are notorious for almost, but not quite, meeting DVD standards.

Actual ripping tools, like MakeMKV, are much better at figuring out marginal disks. The files they generate work well with handbrake.

That's not the issue here. He's using the libfdk encoder in a build that doesn't have it.

Thanks for your responses ...

@rolling_eng: I hadn't installed from handbrake.fr but from Packman (which is usually the most reliable source when it comes to graphics packages - at least in my experience). I tried the version from handbrake as well. The standard install did not work (libs missing, which in turn were missing other libs - I finally gave up ...), but the flatpack installed well and started to encode ... until about halfway into the second pass, when the whole system suddenly crashed (not just handbrake, but the complete computer!).

I resolved the situation for the moment by using the windows version of handbrake in a VM - this installs easily and seems much more stable.

@Rodeo: libfdk-aac2 2.0.1-pm152.1.4-x86_64 is installed - doesn't help ...

OpenSuse Packman is actually on our blacklist for broken builds. (https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/get ... brake.html)

System wide crashes are typically a hardware or driver issue. HandBrake puts a high load on the system so it's quite common to see systems have issues. Typically over-heating, bad memory (or timings that are too tight), unstable overclocks, or bad power supplies are the usual culprits

Re: Beginner*s problems / maybe setup problem

Oh ... That's an interesting fact I had missed ... Good to know!

I will give the manual installation of HB from handbrake.fr another chance when I have more time. For the moment, I'm quite happy with my solution of using HB in a windows VM.

Fun fact aside: When I give such a VM four (of my actual four) processors, I encounter complete system breakdowns quite frequently. The situation gets more stable if I allot only three processors to the VM, and with two everything is absolutely stable. Luckily, the time needed for encoding drops drastically when going from one to two processors, but then only moderately when going to three or even four processors. So a setup with 8 G memory plus two processors for the VM (and the remaining two for whatever I choose to do in the base system) works fine for me (processing time is not really an issue because the HB process works silently while I'm doing my normal work).

Anyway - thanks for your assistance!

Do you run a CPU temperature monitor? If your cooling is inadequate, the CPU temp will rise out of bounds while encoding. Limiting the cores reduces the overall temp rise, which probably is keeping things within the cooling system's limits.
