Handbrake doesn't start to encode.

That is what's shown in the activity window. Error appears since I've updated to Handbrake 1.3.0.

encx265: bad argument 'level-idc=5.1'
Failure to initialise thread 'H.265/HEVC encoder (libx265)'
sync: got 0 frames, 140106 expected

Switching level to "auto" and the encoding starts as usual. But why not with level 5.1 choosen? How can I ensure that compatibility is given for playback via raspberry pi 4?

Because your other settings were incompatible with level 5.1

HandBrake will not automatically sanitize your x265 settings to be compatible with a chosen level. If you provide the full activity log perhaps we can recommend what settings to adjust.

Level was always auto in 1.2.x. Setting to auto here should resolve your issue.

There may be an additional bug; I'll contact our Linux developer.

Seems to work fine here, not sure whether something's being set incorrectly or not. It looks like your settings should be compliant.

Anyway, unlike for H.264, pretty much all H.265 decoders we've tested handle any content up to 4K with level set to auto, so use auto unless you run into a specific issue.

I attempted to reproduce the failure using the same x265 settings and same resolution video. I did not get the error you are seeing. So I'm not sure what is causing the problem. Here's my log in case someone else can spot something I'm missing.

Just to clarify, where did you get HandBrake from? Is it one of our official release builds? Or did you build from source?

I just installed it from the official Manjaro repo.

Well, that's likely the problem right there. Distros pretty much universally build HandBrake wrong and end up breaking it in one way or another. If I had to guess, they've built it against an incompatible version of libx265.

Just tested my settings under Windows via VBox and there are not such issues. Under Linux I cannot choose any level. It doesn't matter which one. The only setting that works is level "auto". If I can give you further informations that may be helpful, let me know.

This is a stumper. I don't see anything that should trigger this particular failure. It's not even checking to see if the level is compatible with other settings at this point in the code. It's only checking that the string is formatted properly. I.e.

It should only generate the error seen if it gets to the final else.

I don't have any suggestions that don't involve compiling the code from source with debugging info and using gdb. This doesn't make any sense.

Hehe, was just thinking the same thing. If it is, I'm surprised nobody's stumbled on it before. x265 is using strtod to convert the value. And strtod is "locale-dependent" according to the man page. So I'll bet that's the problem. It sees the '.' and fails to convert the string to a valid value.

I've applied a fix that should be in the next nightly flatpak build if you want to give that a try. The builds don't always happen "nightly" so keep an eye out for a build with a date after today's date. The date is in the filename of the download.

With the increasing number of languages handbrake supports, maybe it's time that the locale settings be included in the log?
