Preservation of Subtitles in .mkv files

Post by CHEROKII »

Description of problem or question:
Currently trying to re-encode x264 1080p videos into x265 1080p videos. The x264 videos have subtitles. They are not burned in. They can be selected from the subtitle menu in VLC. After re-encoding the option from the subtitle menu disappears. It should also be noted that there are no tracks that appear in the subtitle section of the Handbrake GUI (https://imgur.com/2xRK9y1).

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
I have providing the encoding logs for one such video, but other than providing files, I cannot offer any advice to do so.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.1.0

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Ubuntu 18.10 - Cosmic Cuttlefish

According to the log, you didn't ask for any subtitles other than the foreign audio search. Visit the subtitles tab and adjust the track selection section to capture the languages, etc. you are desiring.

Did what you suggested here. I just re-encoded the first two minutes of what I originally did, to keep things simple. Here's the new pastebin link: https://pastebin.com/ZdmbPWRR.

Log looks the same. If you're using HandBrake from the Ubuntu or similar repository, these third party builds are known broken. Please read https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.1.0/get- ... brake.html for information on the official PPA.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what the problem could be. The log states you did not request any subtitles. Subtitles must be configured in the track selection behavior and not the track list. I suggest after setting things up, you save a custom preset to use (this is required for batch encoding).
