Error encoding DVD extras - x264 [error]: empty stats file

Post by r0d3nt »

Hi Everyone,

I am using the Apple TV preset for the HandBrakeCLI in Linux [Fedora 8] with two pass encoding. I encoded the main feature of this DVD [Over the Hedge] without any issues, but when I go to encode one of the extra features on the DVD, I get an error x264 [error]: empty stats file.

Below is the output of the command and the resultant error/seg fault.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get around this? I've tried this same exact encode on a Intel iMac running Leopard, and HandBrake just quits unexpectedly.

I have used these same option for encoding many other DVDs without issue.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Try without nicing it -- I'm wondering if running under nice has it running with a user id that doesn't have write permissions in /tmp, or something, so it never records stats on the first pass.

Hmm...I use the nice to give the maximum amount of processing power to HandBrakeCLI because I ran into an issue where one of the encodes I did previously created some funky pixelated frames and freaked out my AppleTV on playback [rebooted and went back to the Apple logo].

I've used nice for most all of my encodes without error [60+ encodes]. I'll try running it without it, but the user account that I've been running HandBrakeCLI is root, who shouldn't have any restrictions.

I'll post back the results...

Still the same results. For kicks, I tried encoding title 72, and it started to encode, but title 76 produces a seg fault.

Ooops, I missed a dead give-away from the timestamps in the first log: your stats file is empty because you're never encoding anything. The entire log spans one second of time.

I also didn't pay attention to the DVD title: over the hedge has all sorts of random copy protection on it. As I recall, sr55 was only able to encode it by running it through the Windows-only app AnyDVD first. So I'm guessing it's a problem with how the titles are laid out on the dvd or a bad sector or something: structural copy protection which HB doesn't handle.

Doh! I should have first read that one post throughly about what DVDs have issues before posting. I'll check that post to see what other people have done to get around these type of things.

Sorry for the waste of time.

There were posts about Over the Hedge during the "No Audio" thread days. But like I posted in that thread, it never gave me issues.

I got the main feature to encode just fine, I was trying to encode the extra content that was on the DVD "Hammy's Boomerang Adventure" when I ran into the seg fault error.

I'll poke around the forum some to see what other people have done to get this to work in a similar situation.

Thanx...

When I get home, I'll try to encode the Short. Which title # is it?

(Since I'll be testing anyway)

See above, it is Title #76.

Hammy's Boomerang equals:

DVD.app - Title 76

Fairmount /w DTOX - Title 66

Fairmount /w r1088 HandBrake GUI - Title 75

Either way, it encoded fine for me. Maybe its a Linux issue?

I don't think it is a Linux issue because I tried to encode this same thing on my Intel iMac, and the program either unexpectedly quit or encoded a "blank" 4k file. And besides, now that I look at the total of number of things I've encoded in Linux, it has worked perfectly for 90+ titles.

I don't have Fairmount/DTOX/ or r1088 [? sorry, I'm new here, the acronyms throw me off a bit], so until I get this other software [which might not be for awhile], we'll just use the DVD player.

Thanx for the comments and help, it was greatly appreciated.

The Link above will get you started.

All you really need is Fairmount to rip the title you want. You can feed the GUI the Fairmount disc. Then just encode the title you want (75).
