Encoding a DVD of a British TV Show, Getting Excessive "Ghosting" -- [SOLVED]

Post by ghostrider »

[running handbrake 0.9.9+svn6422+dfsg1-2 on debian 8.7]

I'm trying to encode a Region 1 NTSC DVD of a British TV show, and I'm getting a ton of "ghosting" in the resulting file -- aka, a kind of shadow image that trails quick movements and hangs around for a bit on the screen. I've scoured the internet for help on this one, and there seems to only be a half measure of advice here or there. So, I'm having trouble nailing down the settings needed to get rid of this problem....HELP!

I've read a bit about interlaced frames and the difference between foreign and American TV sources -- I'm pretty sure that's where the problem lies, but I just don't know how to correct it.

I'm ripping the DVD with K3b to an iso, and then using the iso as the source for Handbrake. My settings for the encode are:
  • Denoise filter: Off
  • Detelecine: Default
  • Decomb: Default
  • Storage Geometry: Anamorphic, Strict
  • Video Encoder: H.264
  • Framerate: Same as source, VFR
  • Constant Quality, RF: 20
  • Preset: Slower
  • Tune: None
  • Profile: High
  • Level: Auto
Any help, hints, guidance, or shakubuku's are greatly appreciated -- thanks!

You should be getting your *nix version from here or compile from source.

Sorry about that, newbie mistake. I tried all the same settings as listed above, but changing "Decomb: Default" to "Deinterlace: Slower". The result was a SLIGHT bit better...Here's the activity log:

I've tried compiling from source, but I kept getting a bad compile. I'm having trouble finding the exact dependencies for Debian 8.7, so I went off of Ubuntu. No joy there. I did add the ppa repository and then installed handbrake from there, that got me the 0.9.9 version listed in my original post. Any ideas on how i can get the newest or a newer version?

You need to install from stebbin's PPA, not from the default Ubuntu sources.

Ok, I'm encoding again now...with the following settings:
  • Denoise filter: Off
  • Detelecine: Default
  • Interlace Detection: Default
  • Deinterlace: Decomb
  • Deinterlace Preset: Default
  • Storage Geometry: Anamorphic, Automatic
  • Video Encoder: H.264
  • Framerate: Same as source, VFR
  • Constant Quality, RF: 20
  • Preset: Slower
  • Tune: None
  • Profile: High
  • Level: Auto
I'll post again with either a success or failure update. Thanks!

Problem non-existent in the newer version of Handbrake. Thanks for the replies!

The problem was probably your settings (due to interlaced content) all along, the version had nothing to do with it, but good that you're on the latest build of an official version instead of the broken Ubuntu builds.
