Handbrake Producing Only 10 Chapters

:?: I am currently using Xubuntu v. 13.10 and Handbrake 5953svn (x86_64).

I create MKV files from Blu-ray discs using MakeMKV in order to archive the
discs.

When an MKV file is so created, all of the original chapter markers from
the disc remain in the MKV.

But when I transcode the MKV file using Handbrake, only 10 chapters are
created. These appear apparently at random places within the file.

I do have the Chapter Markers option checked and, before transcoding, I
look and see if all of the chapters are present.

They always are - but they do not appear in the finished transcoded MKV
file.

Obviously I would like to have the original chapter markers appear in that
new file.

In this particular case, the movie was on two discs. I created MKV files for both and then combined the two files into one using MKVMerge.

(Though this is my latest HandBrake encoding, the same thing - producing only 10 chapters - has happened with other Blu-ray discs in which the movie is complete on one disc.)

When the encoding was completed, the file played perfectly except that it has only 10 Chapters. I do not know what is wrong and I would like to have the actual chapters as they appear on the original discs (and the original combined file).

Can anyone help me? :?

The log indicates 48 chapters, so what are using for playback?

Thanks for replying. I am playing the MKV file on an Oppo BDP-93 Blu-ray player http://oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-93/. This player decodes and plays MKV files and generally the chapters when played on this machine are the same as the chapters when the file is played back on a computer (using the VLC Media Player).

But in several cases, including this one, there are only 10 chapters available.

Any thoughts?

I have determined that the problem is being caused by the software in the Oppo BDP-93 player rather than in the MKV file created by HandBrake. When I play the file on my computer, all of the chapters appear and they are in the same place(s) as those of the original Blu-ray.

I'm sorry for having opening a can of worms which happened to me through no fault of HandBrake.

I do thank those who replied to me.

I'd like to bring this subject back up if I could please - I'm using an Oppo BDP103 player and see exactly the same behaviour regarding the chapters (along with another I'll start a new thread for) :-

If you run the mkv file through mkvtoolnix (I'm using the new preview GUI v7.5.0) make absolutely no changes at all to the settings you'll find that the chapters are now detected properly by the player. To me this suggests that people are using slightly different specs for the mkv containers.

I posted this (along with the other) issue on the AVSForum site and that's where I got the info from - the responder there suggested that possibly the Handbrake files are slightly out of spec and mkvtoolnix is basically repairing this.

I'd love to know the answer - and I don't care who's fault it is - I just want things to work as they should...
