Really poor performance under Ubuntu 12.10

Post by AbeFM »

Just curious if this is something on Handbrake's end, or mine. I reinstalled recently due to a number of issues, and while I was at it, I went to 12.10 from 12.04 previously.

I did a round of encodes, and it seemed a little slow, but nothing noteworthy - or maybe I just didn't look closely enough.

That said, on the same machine, where I used to be able to encode in "real time" (i.e. about 1 hour encode time for one hour of video, both passes), now I'm lucky to hit 4:1 (i.e. a half hour show takes over 2 hours to compress. In short, it's slowed down a factor of 4 or 5.

Is there something in the build that's causing this? I haven't seen any updates in a while. CPU usage is low when not compressing, and 100% across all cores when I am, so it seems to be working, and I'm using the same profile I used before.

Any advice?
-Abe.

A complete encode log won't necessarily indicate the issue, but it definitely can't hurt.

I had the logging set to regular, then switched it up, not sure if this is verbose or not.

A comparison log might also be helpful.

Meaning before it was slow? Uhg. I am not *sure* when it got slow, I only noticed it for sure recently. I have them back to when I changed OS's, but the drive was wiped in between so I don't have the old stuff. I'll jump on other machine and post oldest I can find.

Speed seems very similar in both cases (17-20 fps first pass, 7 fps second pass).

As a side note, 256 Kbps for 6-channel discrete w/faac is not a recipe for good quality audio.

Yeah - I have to post another thread later, what to tweak to get better speed at minimal quality hits. In general, I've been very happy with the speed/quality trade offs I've made (though I'm no audiophile, I'm mostly talking in the video dept)....

But as I said, these are all from one long encode - something like this, 150 files, would take a couple days, but I'm less than half way through it in a week. So the log is the same old one. I definitely would get through stuff in real time, i.e. fist pass at 100 fps, second at ~28, so one hour of video would take about 55-60 minutes to compress. I'm nowhere near that now.

Have there been nightly builds posting? I'm wondering if my system isn't updating, because I haven't gotten a new version of handbrake in a long time. Oh! I think I switched to the stable release. Maybe there's my issue? Odd it would be so slow. Could be that or 12.10, maybe it's slow? If so, though, I would expect the CPU's not to be loaded.

Are you sure you were using deblock & denoise before? Those filters are not threaded. Also, decomb got slower between 0.9.5 and 0.9.6 (but more accurate).

While it's certainly possible that some changes snuck in, really, I just back up my old settings, then reload them.

There's a chance that as the program moves forward, the old save files are formatted differently, turning something on? Somewhat unlikely, but not unreasonable.

I think I do remember deblock/denoise making a big difference. The thing that's weird is it's taking SO much longer (or, you're saying it's only 1 core working on it at a time due to the threading??)... I guess perhaps I loaded that and tweaked it before, but it seems odd. I'm leaning more towards an OS thing.

Is decomb smart (i.e. will it not run if not needed)? I use different settings for anime as for live action, but those were both live action so I wouldn't think my denoise/comb settings would be different. Still, I could turn those off and see what I get.

Combing detection always runs. Deinterlacing is then applied selectively when necessary.

this may be of interest to you:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=847551

this seems to be a regression introduced in kernel 3.5. It is still not clear whether it is actually the kernel's fault or if there is a bug in x264 or ffmpeg which was "triggered" by a change introduced in kernel 3.5.

Plase comment on the bug report, maybe then this will get more attention and we can narrow down the problem.

Could you try a nightly build? There was a bug in libav that was fixed after 0.9.8. We didn't think it affected the release because it seemed to be caused by a code change in an intermediate version. But maybe the bug was already there and just required subtly different timing or something to provoke it.

Reference to the bug I'm speaking of

I would be quite happy to try a nightly build - I was for a long time. I'll go back to that set up when next I get to play computer geek. I've been playing mechanic geek for the past week (hence the slow response) - new motor, trans, diff, shocks, short shifter, turbo, exhaust etc in car. Been busy!

Will definitely check out those bugs.

REALLY sorry about taking so long to get to this. A couple rounds of family visits and as I mentioned, all new car has left me pretty much at wit's end for free time.

Got nightly build installed, running first test case. 3 minutes in, first pass looks 40% faster. Second pass will tell the tale. Didn't even reboot between tests.

As a side note, the repositories weren't working, had to get it for precise. That's the only reason I haven't been running it all along.

Will post another update in some hours (or tomorrow) when I have more info to share.

Definately not back to normal. I didn't want to judge on first pass (which is typically 80-100 fps verses the 35 I'm getting now) but the second pass is right where it was, 7-8 fps (verses 22-25).

Not sure what else I can do to help, but it's about 4.5 times as slow as it originally was, or right about where it was when I first posted. Happy to try anything you think will be useful in tracking this down.

My snapshot builds were not firing off automatically (little glitch after 12.10. upgrade). There should be a real quantal snapshot available by tomorrow. A 0.9.8 release is already available for quantal.

I haven't tested "precise" builds on quantal, but running builds I make myself (which should be the same as snapshot builds), I am getting about 900fps encoding DVD material using the equivalent of x264's ultrafast preset and I get about 10fps using the equivalent of x264's placebo preset. That seems pretty normal to me. This is on a 6 core sandybridge i7.

The interesting thing is I made no changes - I mean, same hardware, just took off a flakey Precise and put on a clean Quantal. (I so prefer version numbers. Anyway)

The change is quite dramatic. I was running the released 0.9.8 till last night. The precise build I've got on there now is 5025svn. Very consistent average of 7.5 fps compared to mid twenties before. Compressed 3 shows* in the time I would ordinarily have done 15 or so. I loaded the old presets, so unless:
1) I totally loaded the wrong presets from some even older set
2) The new version interpreted the presets wrong on the import
then it's either the OS or HB itself.

Perhaps there's a well known test file I could run with one of the built in presets to answer this better?
-Abe.

P.S. System: i3-2500T, plenty of ram and a mid level motherboard. As I said, it ran very well before the updates. Actually pretty particular with my settings since defects really show on the bigger screen that I have - but I'll admit to not knowing what they all do. :-)

Hmmm, I have an idea (after a 3 day trip yielded me <15 hours of video)... I am wondering, is there some way I could tell from a compressed file itself the settings that were used to create it? I could compare the settings from videos I know went fast to the current settings.

I'm starting to agree it's a settings thing, perhaps I just need to find a good place to learn about where the low hanging fruit is for quality vs compression time.

I don't see anything in the settings that would cause the problem. But just to be sure, try encoding with one of the built-in presets instead of your custom settings. Check the speed of the "Normal" preset for example.

Is that with standard definition content?

With the official 0.9.8 release, "Normal" preset, standard definition content, I get:

Ubuntu 12.10 64bit hex-core i7 350fps

Yep, Swamp Thing is 480. Yes, I hit "update presets" and then ran a "normal" compression. 42 fps, or 91 min in 54 for a ratio of 0.59

I think stuff is just running really slowly. Not sure why though. I get HB using 370% of CPU, and sysmonitor using up most of the rest. No significant ram is being used off anything, and while the media comes off a magnetic RAID5, HB and the OS and temp files are all installed on a pretty fast SSD.

No idea why it's so slow. Glad to look up anything I can to help.
