Huge size variations with similar content

I've been encoding my DVD collection with Handbrake, and now I am on to the Mystery Science Theater 3000 discs. For a while I was using a constant-bitrate setting, but after reading the forums and upgrading to Handbrake 0.9.5 I decided to switch to a constant-quality (RF=20) setting.

All of the titles are about the same length (~92 minutes), and until recently they were all encoding to around the same size (roughly 1GB), but I did two in a row where the size worked out to around 950MB and 1.8GB respectively. I re-did the encode on the second one because I thought I had used the wrong preset, but it came out the same again.

I settled on some settings that are a sort of compromise between the "fast" and "slow" presets shown in the sticky on these forums. Decomb/deinterlace are enabled, and set to defaults - I am starting to wonder if that has something to do with it, because the MST3K content is a little weird like that (interlaced for TV, but with long stretches of 24fps telecine'd movie).

I'm trying to find out why two encodes would be so drastically different in size. I'm guessing I may have a setting that should be set differently, but I am open to suggestions about what that should be.

Hard to tell without seeing the source. But the fact that it deinterlaced twice as many frames in the larger one indicates that it probably has a lot more motion/action than the smaller one. High motion will cause larger files.

Since it's MST3K, you're also dealing with a lot of older movies, so variations in film graininess could be involved. You might try messing with denoise settings and see if that evens things out.

Thanks, those are good ideas - I did try turning the denoise up to "medium" but it only reduced the size to 1.7G. Then I tried it again with other settings tweaked to reduce the bitrate more (basically the "slow" preset), but still wound up with about the same size.

Also,the original encode started seriously dropping frames when played back on my XBMC box, while all of the other ones seemed to work fine. There must be something unusual about the source, but I can't figure out what it is.

Okay, here's some more information: While watching some of the larger rips, I found that there was a lot of visible "combing" during some scenes - and even during the movie, not just the host segments. I hadn't expected that because I thought the telecine process would mean the decomb filter wasn't doing much work. But, if some of the comb artifacts came through, that would explain why those episodes took up more bits.

I had been leaving the decomb turned on, but set at "default" because the wiki article on Decomb says it hasn't been updated for 0.9.5 yet. Can anyone suggest some decomb settings for 0.9.5 that would be more aggressive than the default?
