[SVN 1797] 6-channel AAC input does not work

Post by Northy »

There seems to be a bug when converting MKV's as the sound from AAC sources is not existent and AC3 it is only on one side.

I'm using the Mac GUI SVN 1797 one on OS X 1.5.4, Downloaded Oct. 2nd. Film was Rambo (2008, If you want the settings for the org. encode just ask) Settings in HandBrake were: 832 x 400 Anamorhpic (Strict), H.264 in M4V, AAC (Stereo) Auto (khz) 160 (kbps). I was running Safari in the Background (It also happened when I was running nothing). The problem is reproducable as it happens with all m-HD (Micro HD) files I use.

Here is the log (I think it is the right one please say if it isn't):

Re: [SVN 1797]Sound Issues When Converting MKV

Post by Northy »

Here is the org. file specs:

Code: Select all

[Resolution ].....[ 832*400 (Anamorph)
[Frame Rate ].....[ 23.976 fps
[Aspect Ratio ]...[ 2.44:1
[Video C/B ]......[ x264 ~1472 kbps
[Audio C/B ]......[ ND HE-AAC 6ch ~196 kbps
[Language ].......[ English
[Subtitle ].......[ English (Not hardsubbed)
[Container ]......[ MatRoska (.mkv)
At this moment I'm trying it out with a different extension to see if that has an effect as my first AVI didn't work but when I did it again (I had to anyway as I messed up the resolution) and I changed the extension to .mp4 instead of .m4v (Which it saves as automatically) it worked fine.

Fingers crossed.

[01:35] [eddyg] Also minor changes to work.c and Controller.mm to allow Mono for FFMPEG inputs
[01:35] [eddyg] We also need to think about what to do with 6 channel AAC inputs
[01:36] [eddyg] Do we only allow 6 channel discrete ouput? Or do we mixdown to stereo or 6 channel?
[01:36] cdaiger|laptop_ (n=cdaiger@c-68-80-83-55.hsd1.de.comcast.net) joined #handbrake-dev.
[01:36] [eddyg] I guess we can't do an AC3 encoder for licensing reasons.
[01:36] #handbrake-dev: mode change '+v cdaiger|laptop_' by HandBot!n=HandBot@conan.lapsus.org
[01:50] [eddyg] FYI: http://handbrake.pastebin.ca/1030538
[01:50] [eddyg] Mega patch fixes hangs
[01:50] [eddyg] well it does for me anyway
[01:50] [eddyg] the audio channel count was out by one.
[01:51] [eddyg] Changes are to stream.c to fix array, and also to work.c and Controller.c to allow Mono from an FFMPEG source.
[01:52] [eddyg] Similar fix should be put in for 6 channel input, but I didn't do that at the time.
Well, I don't think 6 Ch AAC input is supported, yet. That blurb above was all I could find. Hopefully, I am wrong. Since you own the disc, why not rip again?

OK 6 channel not supported, I'll just remux it :D I don't have the disc as they are all badly damaged as I ripped these a while back before I was on Mac and MKV was the best back then for Windows users and still is.

I have confirmed 6 Channel AAC input is not currently handled.

Re: [SVN 1797] 6-channel AAC input does not work

While this is still here, what inputs are handled/supported? I know AC3 & AAC 2Ch (2Ch is that right? not so good on the audio side) are anymore handled/supported?

Thanks

Status update:

j45 has provided a patch http://handbrake.fr/pastebin/pastebin.php?show=1069 that will allow HandBrake to downsample 6 channel aac input to 2 channel, a workaround to this bug until proper 6 channel decoding and/or passthru is supported.

We're still aware of the issue (and now know the cause). It basically affect all audio codecs (except AC3 and DTS which HB handles separately) which ffmpeg can't mixdown to stereo.

A fix is being worked on, but we're not sure on what's the best approach yet. There's an experimental patch that fixes it (only for AAC) but may cause other issues:

Not being a programmer, but understanding that a workable (at least for the time being) patch exists, could someone kindly tell me where I can find a compiled executable with the patch integrated?

Many thanks,

I'm also wanting to convert apple trailers with 6 channel audio to something that I can at least hear. So far I've yet to figure out a workaround to this. I see that there is a posted fix unfortunately I have no idea how to apply the code to handbrake so I am still trying to find another way around it even if I could just find something else to downmix the audio for me and then run it through handbrake, but I can't find anything that just touches the audio and leaves the video untouched. If anyone knows how to do this let me know. Or if you could just work your current 6 channel AAC fix into the latest snapshot that'd be great too. I can't find a single other converter that matches your quality but all of them that I have tried have working audio from these files.
