SVN1477 (and 1457): Changes to H264 options/header info?

Post by jamescross » Sat May 31, 2008 7:31 pm

I encoded a video using new build 1477 using IDENTICAL CLI command as I use on HB 0.92 (using PS3 preset).

With 1477, the resulting file plays fine on PS3, but on my Archos 605 when I skip ahead I get error:
"Codec H.264 "Profile" and "Level" [Baseline/4.1] is not supported."

I've encoded hundreds of videos/DVDs using HB 0.92 (again, using PS3 preset) that play fine on both the PS3 and Archos. And like I mentioned I used exact same CLI.

So I'm wondering if there has been any changes to default H264 settings, or header information in 1477?

(I can provide more info/log if anyone cares for it...)

Are you for real?
The snapshot webpage you must have read wrote:Found a bug?: Please post in the "bugs" section of the forum with "[SVN 1477]" in the subject line.
Please provide an Activity Log and a Crash Log (If one is available) .
These are required in order to debug problems. Any post without these will be locked.

I realise HB developers don't support the subversions, but users are allowed to post feedback on snapshots.

I've run into the same issue with the Archos 705, and I am providing activity logs for reference.

Here I encoded 2 chapters of a TV title (with a mix of hard-telecined and soft-telecined content)

Using HB 0.9.2, iPod Hi-Rez, no changes:

Result plays on the Archos 705, but there is no working preview, and fast forward causes this error by the Archos:
"Cannot play video!
Codec H.264 "Profile" and "Level" [Baseline/3.0] is not supported"

The Archos can handle a few things above iPod Hi-Rez, but I chose it for testing here as a low common denominator.

I haven't been able to find a definitive list of what advanced options the Archos 705 can handle. Here is what I've discovered so far:
Archos 705 doesn't display anamorphic video in m4v container correctly and it causes stuttering during playback.
Archos 705 doesn't handle CABAC entropy, and I haven't checked B-frame compatibility yet.
Archos 705 does handle VFR in m4v container!

The reason I would desperately want to encode with a newer version than 0.9.2 is because I love the decomb filter (combined with de-telecine+vfr) for use on mixed film, hard-telecined and pure video content, not to mention adaptive quantization available in more recent subversions.

Again, I realise HB developers don't support the subversions, but If anyone has any thoughts on where the problem may lie, I'd love to hear.
note: I'm not saying this is a bug necessarily, but something has definitely changed which causes issues with the Archos.

thanks,

Does 0.9.2 let you skip ahead if you use VFR?

Also...it's fine to post bug reports for snapshot releasesd svn revisions like 1477. Just not the latest code from the trunk.

Thanks for providing activity logs, unlike the original poster.

It appears the answer is NO, I encoded the same title with HB 0.9.2, iPod Hi-Rez + VFR (and detelecine).
The resulting video plays smoothly on the Archos , but gives the same error if I try to fast forward. The menu preview also doesn't work.

In my HB svn 1477, iPod Hi-Rez encode I never specifically turned on the VFR (or detelecine), but see the file is playing at varying framerates in QT (30fps and 24fps).

I guess VFR is the culprit? Can anything be done?

I did another test with HB SVN 1477, iPod HR, no vfr and framerate set specifically to '23.976 (NTSC Film)' instead of 'same as source (23.976)'. The result plays with varying framerates again. Are x264 encodes alway VFR by default now? Can I set a constant framerate? Come to think of it, I think I read something about this...

I'm not sure what to try next, but will keep trying.
Thanks

Since shortly after 0.9.2, HandBrake's default video rate is variable, because it passes through the exact frame durations. This is what "Same as Source" framerate does now -- it's literally the same as the source.

This is actually a result of a bug report you filed, about missing frames in the Sopranos. Frames were missing/duped because the synchronization code forced frame durations to have a constant length. When this diverged enough from the audio, frames would be copied or discarded to bring the timecodes back in line.

Apparently, your device can't handle seeking with variable frame rates.

When you specify an exact FPS in HandBrake, it will use the old code to force frames to constant durations so yes, just do that.

Thanks for that. Things are generally much better as far smooth video goes!

After much trial and error, I think this doesn't work until around svn 1497.

If I do this, HB will drop 1 in 5 frames for video and hard telecined conent, right? How does it decide which ones?
Should I be bothering with detelecine? Without VFR enabled, I'd be left with duplicate frames, and HB might discard the wrong ones (to get to back to film), leading to un-smooth video.

What do you think?

Oh. Yeah. Sorry, forgot it was after the last snapshot.

Yes, it will definitely discard the wrong ones -- sync is not informed by pullup. Instead, just use regular detelecine with an fps of 29.97. This will leave behind the duplicate frames, but get rid of the interlacing, and do so way better than decomb would.
