Heavy pixelation in video file

Post by MiMoHo »

Please describe the problem in as much detail as possible:
I encountered a problem converting a MKV H.264 video to another bitrate using either the H.264 or H.265 codec in MKV and MP4 container trying different bitrates. The result is always strongly visible artefacts. You can download the original file "test.mkv" without this pixelation and the exported file here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... GxxbVR4OEE

What are the steps to reproduce this problem:
Convert the video using Handbrake 1.0.0 or later to reproduce the problem. In Handbrake 0.10.5 there is no such effect and the clip looks fine as with any other video converter that I used instead.

What version of HandBrake are you running:
1.0.7

What operating system and version and you running (e.g. OSX 10.11, Windows 7, Ubuntu 14):
Mac OS X 10.11.6

Where did you download HandBrake from? handbrake.fr or somewhere else?
Official website

If there was any error, exception or crash report displayed, please copy it and paste it here:

Please include the scan or encode log:

Do you have a log of a previous successful encode?

You're using the ultrafast x26r preset is the "bad" encode vs. the medium x265 preset in the "good" encode.

That being said, this may also be of interest:

Your source file looks like it's only ~30 seconds long, could you please upload it somewhere so we can take a look at it?

The converting speed doesn't matter.

True, the source file is 30 seconds long. I can upload the entire 90 minutes video if you like but it doesn't change the problem. But for now, please refer to my first post where you find the necessary steps to reproduce the good and bad encode by comparing the results of the old and new Handbrake version. A link to download the source file "test.mkv" and bad encode "test_export.mkv" is already included.

Looks like a probably decoding and/or demuxing bug indeed. Not sure when I'll be able to investigate though. Anyone feel free to beat me to it.

Is there any advance in solving this issue? The latest version from July 14 still creates a corrupt stream.

just stop the x.265 suport... it's too bugged.

You're hurting the image of Handbrake, CRF 22 give pixelated video, CRF 26, both on medium.

STOP x.265 encoder, same video on staxrip 15. is fine, on handbrake pixelated.

Now on staxrip:

Nice thing is that on this movie almost all scenes it's pixelated, stop supporting x.265 until u fix this.

Did you even BOTHER to read the github issue?! Or even the OP's report? It has NOTHING to do with the target encoder.

Fixed that for you.
