Audio Artifacts When Converting from WMV to Ipod Mp4

Post by JustMom »

Apologies is this has been address previously or is in the wrong place.

Please describe the problem in as much detail as possible:
In the new update (v.1.0.7 2017040900 -64 bit), when I convert an wmv file created with Windows Movie Maker, when there are scenes involving rain or rain or running water, audio artifacts distort the sound. This did not happen in the previous version I used, v. 0.9.9-1 64 bit), I just ran the ipod preset with no problems. No matter what bitrate I choose when using avcodec, it doesn't remove the artifact. I converted it to an mp4 using the mp3 codec, no artifacts, but can't play on the ipod.
What are the steps to reproduce this problem:
from this file: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing, load the "My Introverted Boss NEW 02.WMV" file, open HandBrake v.1.0.7 2017040900 -64 bit and choose "Iphone, Ipod touch" preset, changing the file output type to mp4 and the resolution to 640X360p. Allow to run, view video. In the first scene there is running water, you can hear the distortion. (Apologies for the content, I have teenage daughters and I edit these "fan videos for their ipods). A predone example of the issue is also in that folder, marked "My Introverted Boss NEW 02 360p ipod touch.mp4".
What version of HandBrake you are running:
(v.1.0.7 2017040900 -64 bit)
What operating system and version and you running (e.g. OSX 10.11, Windows 7, Ubuntu 14):
Windows 7 Home Premium
Where did you download HandBrake from? handbrake.fr or somewhere else?
I upgraded the previous version I had through the program

# Encode Completed ...

As I said earlier, I didn't have this issue on the previous build I was using. Is it possible to have both versions installed and usable on my laptop? I need the newer build to access x265 files, the previous version couldn't read them.

I should also say that I'm "just" a mom trying to do stuff for my kids, I'm not super techie as far as writing code or installing codecs. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Apologies for the delayed response.

I've listened to your samples and I hear the artifacts. Unfortunately, the audio encoder we use on Windows machines is less efficient than Apple's audio encoder on Mac. The sound of running water is a very complex sound, and the encoder doesn't do a perfect job reproducing it.

I tried encoding your source file with the same settings you mention on a Mac, and the sound is definitely improved in the first water scene. If you have access to a Mac, using HandBrake with the same settings should help, as it will automatically use Apple's higher quality audio encoder. There is no easy solution for Windows in this case. Sorry about that.

Hope this helps.

Well, depending on the playback software or device being used, there's the option of using a non-AAC encoder.

I believe she specified iPod touch. My understanding is that AAC audio is pretty much required for video on the platform.

Hello. No problem with the delay, I've been checking infrequently, so now I'm delayed. :)

Unfortunately, I don't have access to a Mac, we're primarily a Windows family. And yes, I have to use an AAC encode codec for the Ipod. The only way I have found to deal with the issue is to have two versions of Handbrake installed, the newer version, and the previous, older, version I had before the update - v.0.9.9.1. That version uses a different codec to encode audio, that one doesn't have the artifacts. It's odd, but it's a cleaner sound. I use that version when I need to encode these fan videos (ah, fandom), my only concern is that with the arrival of my new laptop I may not be able to install the older version. At that point there may be more of an issue.

Thank you for the replies, it's nice to know (in a weird way) that it's the program and nothing I've done to create the problem.

I should also mention, that I *did* try the other, non AAC audio codecs, but I had the same issue. Then I remembered Apple's pesky AAC requirements so it didn't matter anyway.

Sorry about this, it's frustrating for sure. We recently had to stop distributing fdk-aac, the superior encoder used in previous versions of HandBrake, due to a license conflict. Hopefully the current aac encoder will continue to mature.

We do have an old version archive here: https://handbrake.fr/old.php

Versions with FDK are only available in source form though.

Hmm, that's frustrating, and I'm sure not just for me. I'm keeping my old Windows 7 laptop until it dies even with the newer laptop, so if the older version of handbrake won't work on Win 10, I can still encode on the old laptop. Apologies to ask, but which version was the last version to support fdk-aac? I ask only if I am able to "update" to the newest older version that supports it in case the version I have won't work.

Thanks again for the replies, apologies on the delays for responses. A mother's work is never done, lol!

There are no more compiled (i.e. executable) versions of handbrake available for download that have fdk-aac in them. The problem was that the license for fdk-aac does not allow binary distribution.

You can compile the current one with fdk-aac, however.

Woodstock the engineer. :)

Apologies, I didn't realize we scrubbed the old versions, too. I guess that makes sense.

Looks like someone made a fairly comprehensive guide: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/383 ... or-Windows

Feel free to get in touch anyway. Cheers.

Thanks! That's very kind! Apologies again for the delay, I'm not usually this behind. My new laptop arrived with a USB port that was bent during manufacture, it's taken Dell 2 weeks to finally fix the issue. I'm now back online, my old laptop wireless card died right before my new laptop arrived, I'm playing catchup.

Update, sort of:

I installed my original version of Handbrake today, v. 0.9.9-1 64 bit, on the new laptop running the latest version of Win 10. So far, it works as well as it did on Win 10, which - for ME, anyway - solves my concern about encoding mp3s without audio artifacts. I have yet to determine if I'll bother installing the current version of Handbrake as the only reason was to have access to the x265 codec, but I haven't needed it so far.

Thank you all again for the replies and the offers of help!

I just realized I meant "works just as well as it did on Win 7", not Win 10. I am an idiot.
