Picture/Anamorphic/Automatic -> Output Display Size inconsistent

Post by knusperj » Tue Dec 27, 2016 9:34 am

Please describe the problem in as much detail as possible:
The displayed Output Resolution "Display Size: X*Y" in anamorphic-automatic-mode depends on the anamorphic mode configured before.
Source: 720x576
If switching from anamorphic none -> automatic, shown display size is 722x406
If switching from anamorphic loose -> automatic, shown display size is 1024x576

I do not know for now what the encoded display size is.

What are the steps to reproduce this problem:
switching from anamorphic none -> automatic
switching from anamorphic loose -> automatic

What version of HandBrake you are running:
1.0.0

What operating system and version and you running (e.g. OSX 10.11, Windows 7, Ubuntu 14):
Windows10

I do not know for now what the encoded display size is.
Do you have the (required) encode logs from the two encodes, will tell us that and a lot more?

[14:56:44] + Crop and Scale (width=720:height=576:crop-top=0:crop-bottom=0:crop-left=0:crop-right=0)
[14:56:44] + source: 720 * 576, crop (0/0/0/0): 720 * 576, scale: 720 * 576
[14:56:44] + Output geometry
[14:56:44] + storage dimensions: 720 x 576
[14:56:44] + pixel aspect ratio: 64 : 45
[14:56:44] + display dimensions: 1024 x 576
Looks spot on to me for loose
[14:54:39] + Crop and Scale (width=720:height=406:crop-top=0:crop-bottom=0:crop-left=0:crop-right=0)
[14:54:39] + source: 720 * 576, crop (0/0/0/0): 720 * 576, scale: 720 * 406
[14:54:39] + Output geometry
[14:54:39] + storage dimensions: 720 x 406
[14:54:39] + pixel aspect ratio: 406 : 405
[14:54:39] + display dimensions: 721 x 406
Also technically correct.

Going from None -> Automatic doesn't automatically adjust the height for you. So, You got the non anamorphic height, which is the limiting factor in the automatic calculation. You can manually adjust the hieght back and when you press start, it should keep things correct.

There is a discussion to be had there from a UX point of view how best to handle these situations I think.

Interesting. From my end-user point of view, i expected that a value of a certain setting is indepenet from the value which was set before.

Regards.

Ah, the "why does it keep changing my settings" approach.

Rather the "why does it create different output on same settings" approach. - No offense!

Ok, i see (now).
When set to anamorphic-none the "Height"-value is altered. When switching to anamophic-automatic that value is kept.

Just FYI. This UIX problem is exactly the reason that Linux GUI has always had a checkbox that, when checked, keeps width and height at the "best" values given the source resolution and other picture settings. It is the first widget in the "Storage Geometry" area and is labeled "Optimal for source". The label is a bit on the vague side (I couldn't think of anything better), but the tooltip explains it's function:
If enabled, select the 'optimal' storage resolution.
This will be the resolution that most closely matches the source resolution after cropping.
In more technical terms, this checkbox is checked when the preset key "UsesPictureSettings" == 2. The same calculation that is performed when loading the preset or loading a new title is performed whenever any resolution altering setting changes and width and height are updated accordingly.

Having the same issues on the Picture tab on the Mac version.

If I've got 'Anamorphic: auto' set, then attempt to use custom cropping it messes up. Basically, applying cropping alters the storage size, but rolling back those cropping changes does not update the storage size (and thus messes up the PAR and Display Size.

To reproduce (1) For a PAL DVD source, set Storage Size as 720 x 576 (check 'Keep Aspect Ratio', anamorphic on 'auto'); (2) Set cropping to 'Custom' and values to '0,0,-0,-0'; (3) Apply a cropping value of '6' to the top of the frame (Storage will drop to 720 x 570); (4) Subtract the cropping value and return it to 0; (Result) Storage size still reads 720 x 570 and PAR is changed.
