DTS and DTS-HD are not the same for pass through. There is a separate pass through option for DTS-HD.

So may be I'm wrong here.

My intention is to extract only the dts stream to the encoded mkv from the source mkv with dts-hd.

Is this not possible with handbrake or do I have to use another option for the audio track?

This is indeed not possible with HandBrake, unless you feed it a Blu-ray structure (or at least an M2TS transport stream) as input (in which case the DTS core will be presented as a separate track).

What did you use to rip the BD?

The default in MakeMKV is to make separate tracks for the DTS core and DTS-HD. For example, Zootopia has a DTS-HD 7.1 track, but MakeMKV also extracts the core out to a DTS Surround 5.1 track.

That second track could be passed through using handbrake's DTS pass through option.
