Handbrake suddenly makes bad compression

Post by ImJim »

Please describe the problem in as much detail as possible:
Since yesterday, Handbrake compresses videos horribly. I've been using the same settings since I first installed the program, but it looks like this bug occurs since I switched to Windows 10 three days ago.
What are the steps to reproduce this problem:
I guess you can't.
What version of HandBrake you are running:
Latest, 0.10.5
What operating system and version and you running (e.g. OSX 10.11, Windows 7, Ubuntu 14):
Windows 10.0

Can you post a screenshot of the original and the encode showing the difference?

Yes of course.

Original file :
http://i.cubeupload.com/em1X0y.jpg

Compressed file :
http://i.cubeupload.com/w34s39.jpg

Settings:
Bitrate: 16,000 kbps
FPS: 25
x264

Look at the loss of detail, especially on the back bag and the bricks in the background...

Note that I've been literally doing hundreds and hundreds of compression tests with this program since almost two years now, and that I KNOW that a bitrate of 16,000 does not affect the video at all, normally. This blocking and terrible compression is absolutely new to me.

Seems like Windows 10 may have altered the color calibration of your monitor.

Maybe try adding "aq-mode=3" (without quotes) to the additional x264 options text box (this option is not available in version 0.9.9, IIRC).

Do you have the same issue if you use a CQ of 18 or 16.

Thanks for the reply. I tested your suggestion, it didn't change anything. I guess I should switch back to Win 8.... Once again. This Windows sh** already [Censored] me off months ago.

First, don't post screenshots in JPG, use PNG which are lossless. JPG adds compression so we can't tell what's jpg vs h264 compression.

Windows 10 should not affect the encode, and it doesn't look like a decode issue to me. If anything i'd say the output was gainer / colour shifted slightly.

Try it with all hardware encoding turned "off" and see if it makes a difference to you.

Okay, switched back to Windows 8 and it didn't change anything. Still trying to figure out what is going on.

What is the difference between this and the first log?

I set your images up in Photoshop, and the difference between the two is about as close to null as you're going to get considering the jpeg image compression. The place to watch for artifacts is in the shadows, but they don't show up in your screenshots. All I can detect is a tiny bit of moire at very exaggerated contrast levels while viewing the composited difference. You may be suffering from a partial pixel overload.

Look at the loss of detail, especially on the back bag and the bricks in the background...
I don't see the difference.

Here's the difference. See it now?
Neither do I.

I can see a noticeable difference… after craning both shadows & exposure to max. in Preview.app.

Basically something changed his display calibration which is now much "brighter" and shows things you aren't supposed to see.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to examine the two images. What can I do for now?

Maybe I should completely restore Windows... This issue is really concerning.

No, you should try re-calibrating your display. TBH I'm not sure how good this article is, but it does give some instructions:

http://www.wikihow.com/Calibrate-Your-Monitor

Basically, the issue is that pixels in that area are so dark that they shouldn't be visible (which is why x264 allocated fewer bits to the area, causing it to have more - theoretically invisible - artifacts), but for some reason something changed your monitor calibration, and it's now showing things that aren't distinguishable on a properly calibrated monitor.

All I can say is that I often switch between two monitors, namely, an external monitor on my desk, and the monitor of my laptop (I unplug the big monitor on my desk when I move).. But.. I came back home today and re-checked.. Even bright areas of my compressed videos show extremely bad compression.. I'll post examples in a few minutes.

Isnt this one of the reasons a CQ encode should be used rather than a fixed bitrate?
