Re: Handbrake suddenly makes bad compression

Post by ImJim »

Check these out. Here are two extracts from a video I just converted. The original video has a bitrate of 50,000 kbps. The video comes from my camera. I converted it to mp4 with a bitrate of 16,000, and it's what I've been doing with my videos for two years now. This process has never destroyed my videos, until now. The compression was almost lossless, no blocking or artifacting at all.

The difference is obvious. Look at the wood boards and the details on the concrete / wall.

Here are the logs:

Yea I know. I made lots of tests yesterday with version 0.10.5, and the same thing occurs. Exactly the same compression problem. Also, since this day, when I install HB ver. 0.10.5 and try to run the program, it doesn't open. Yes, my PC is really screwing up these days.

Version 0.9.9 is about 2 years old, it is no longer supported.

I think you need to settle down so we can figure out what is happening, one minute your using 10.5 then 9.9 then windows 8 then windows 10.

Desperately trying to reinstall the latest version, my PC doesn't want to run the program.

It does look oddly soft for a 16 Mbps encode. Do things improve if you enable 2-pass encoding?

Don't use 0.9.9 and please post your log when done.

I would try a nightly build.

No it doesn't. I've been able to launch it via failsafe mode. I then tried to launch it again after restarting the PC but again, nothing opens.

If you can't get the program running there isn't much else we can do, is there anything in the windows logs or maybe your virus scanner logs?

Just took a look at the images in this thread. My display is properly calibrated and I see the apparent lack of fine detail.

It would appear that something has changed; without encode logs comparing a good and bad encode it's hard to say what. Factors other than bit rate could be involved.

Hate to say this but I think your Windows install is basically FUBAR'ed from upgrading, downgrading, rolling back etc...

Reformat and clean install imo.
